Need some help with my Reign
« on: March 25, 2010, 10:45:35 AM »
I got a Reign from my brother that he didn't like, and so far neither do I.  Layout for me would be about 5 1/2 to 5 3/8 below the bridge with the cg just above the thumb.  Threw on the league shot oob and the ball just labored big time, hit it with 2000 and sorta helped but just lead to ringing 10's.

Oil pattern isn't the issue.  I can throw just about anything on our shot, Evolve, One Pearl, Gamebreaker, Hyroad, etc.  My pap is 5 1/2 x 1/2 up and rev rate is lower tier 400

Now, I don't know a whole lot about x-holes, but I know when a ball needs one and this one does.  So, I took it to the shop and weighed her out: 3/4 side, 15/16 thumb.

So, what should I do? The ball motion looks ok, but ideally what I would like is for the ball to pick up about 2-3 feet sooner and a few boards stronger overall.

An extra hole on val, about 2" below pap should increase the flare and do what you want, without much risk of flaring over the hole. Try 1" drilled about 3" deep.

The OOB cover is 1500 grit polish.I would put some surface on it.Say 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper,no polish.

I've thrown it at 2000 and wasn't pleased.  I could try 1000 but the way it looks now, probably won't help

you said the CG was just above your thumb.  A hole on the val 2 inches down would be good but if your cg is not swung enough you might not be able to keep the statics legal.  When i lay out a symetrical ball no matter what the pin distance is i try to keep the cg giving me 3/4 ounces of side wait so if i want or need a hole its easy to keep the statics legal.  I will be drilling two reigns this week.  Probably pin down 5 inch and a pin up at about 4 to 4.5.  Ill re post what i find about it.

For what its worth, I have drilled another reign for myself and absolutely love it.  It is drilled 4 5/8 below my ring finger, 50 degree shift and hole on my axis.  I throw it 1000+shine and was hoping for this ball to be a step down from it, but right now, it just doesn't read the lane good at all.

OP stated he had the ball weighed and it has 3/4 positive side. Even if the hole were to take the statics negative it would still be legal without a problem. Having the hole would far outweigh any potential effect from the statics.

I drilled three different Reigns, two pin over, and one pin under. The pin over Reigns work great. They read the lanes the way they are supposed to. The pin under, not so much. For me, the drilling fights the intent of the ball. The Reign and the Fast share the same cover. I have a pin under Fast that works really good, but the core is alot weaker, and it doesn't use up too much energy early. This goes back to a post I made in a different thread, about matching the drilling to the strength of the intent of design of the bowling ball. Using a pin under drilling isn't really allowing the Reign to perform at it's optimum design intent, long and strong. I AM NOT SAYING to never drill pearl balls pin under, I have a pin under 2nd Dime, and a pin under Gravity that are my 2 favorite balls, but I am just saying that you are going to risk a possible miss match of cover, core, and design intent.
