Rev Rate 350-380
PAP 5.5 x .75

In college the tournament generally starts out as a heavy flat pattern.  The track burns up quickly giving people with hand some dry boards to bounce it off of.  My main troubles with college tournaments is getting a smooth reaction on broken down patterns and getting my ball to not hook in the heads when the lanes get fried.

Currently thinking:
Heavy Oil- Cell or Dimension 50 X 4.5" x 40
Med+  - that has opened up Gravity Shift or Rival 50 X 5" X 50
Meds Smooth - Gamebreaker or Playmaker or nighthawk or? 50 x 5" x 50
Meds Angular - Rapid Fire Pearl 70 x 5.5" x 70
Fried - Jolt Pearl or Avalanche or Razyr 70 x 5.5 x 40

College tournaments limit us to 5 balls but i like to keep at least 6... I like to have a ball that will give me a look different than anything else I have (used to be a Pure hammer, till it cracked out) Currently thinking a high load particle  pearl or a polished solid particle.

Please help with the lay outs!  also if you have any experience with the balls i'm thinking about or recommendations feel free to ring in!

For what it's worth from my experience, when the pattern starts breaking down and I'm looking to smooth out my reaction, I like using my Cell with a pin down layout on it, long pin to PAP, just shy of 6" probably.  As long as I keep my speed up, it's money until the heads go.  Then it's time to switch to something that gets down the lane.  Of course your mileage may vary.  You may also want to consider a Street Rod Solid or Pearl or maybe a Pluto for a smooth reaction on medium lanes.  Sooo smooth but they still turn the corner on the back well enough to carry.

Thanks Dan,

I have been thinking about the Pluto but haven't had a chance to watch anybody throw it (other than the reviews on youtube... but those reviews make everything look so similar). I have been thinking about the Cell, I have heard mixed things about which is weaker... college tournaments don't stay oily long enough for me to keep a flood ball in my bag.

For flatter patterns, I always keep a ball in the bag with surface and a small pin to PAP distance. Right now, its a 2" Wizard for me. It reads the end of the pattern extremely which helps out during the fresh. I would suggest using a symmetric ball for this. I'd like to see you go with the Gamebreaker with a 1.5 or 2" pin distance from your PAP.

Also, I like the idea of weak layouts with strong surface for tougher patterns because you don't really want a ball to just "flat out hook"

We have about the same rev rate so this is what i'd go with for you:

Cell: same layout you suggested but the pin lower
Smash Zone: pin high, 5", hole down on VAL
Gamebreaker: 1.5" to PAP
Gamebreaker: pin down 5.5" to PAP
Avalanche Solid: pin high, 5.5"
Razyr: pin down, 5.5"

What's your ball speed like?  I personally have found the Cell isn't a "flood" ball for me since I drilled it weaker (again, almost a 6" pin to PAP distance for mine) and I tend to throw it pretty fast (17-18mph per Qubica measurements most of the time).  It can handle any volume of oil you throw it at it with some surface on it, but it also is so continuous and smooth that I can keep throwing it even when the lanes start to dry out if I have it at 1000 or 2000 abralon.  I have in fact switched to it in the late games of a tournament when the carrydown got bad, I just had to throw it harder.

And yeah, you're right, do you don't see the Pluto and Street Rods thrown very often.  They're very underrated balls in my opinion.  They're cheap, but the coverstocks and cores are all top quality.  The Street Rod Pearl is one of the smoothest pearls I've seen in awhile, and the Pluto actually helped my buddy win a $500-to-win tournament a few months ago.

I agree with what BrunsWolf has said except for the Smash Zone. I think instead of the Smash Zone, you need a ball that can dominate heavier mediums with clean backends so you can get good entry angle(something along the lines of a Gravity Shift or a Complete NV with the same layout he suggested)

Looking at that arsenal...

I like the Gravity Shift at the Med +......

Think the Gamebreaker is too much ball even drilled weak for the Meds...and this would probably be your benchmark ball I would be looking at a solid....
a Pluto, Street Rod are two that have been talked about that would sit here...as would the Rapid Fire if you took the shine off it....

Hope this helps!

Thanks Everybody,

I have tried using a 2" pin on a few balls before the tropical storm (turned out a little stronger and angular than i wanted) and on a HPC zone which worked very well.

Would there be enough difference between a 2" pin Gamebreaker and a 5.5" pin playmaker or Rapid Fire Solid? Is the Rapid Fire Solid nearly as smooth as a gamebreaker/playmaker?
