Storm Reign for heavy oil?? Vid inside
« on: March 30, 2010, 07:01:25 PM »
Wow this ball is aggressive, from the vid I will post below.. I have a Brunswick Diamond back now, and am weighing out my options for a heavier oil , heavier hooking ball in general and/or also be able to use it once the lanes break down a bit..  Been comparing it to , the Python, so far, and it looks like it could be VERY aggressive

The pearl reign is a medium-dry oil ball at best.  It's designed to go long and snap.  On true heavy oil, this ball out of the box wouldn't move but a few boards at best.  Buddies uses walled up medium oil shots, the shot were the reign is an absolute beast on.

For heavy oil, you're much, much better off with a duller solid.  Reign of fire, seige, etc.

i thought it was medium-heavy..? I see a ton of ppl throwing on 40+ foot fresh oil shots ( with descent oil )  and it skids, and snaps good at the end..   All ive been looking for is a nice pearl to compliment the DB..  But from what im getting the reign, and even the rattler are going do be very snappy, but only for 2nd , and 3 rd games after the oil carried and the lanes are a bit more broken down.. Is that kind of accurate?? lol Sorry , Im still new  in getting back into the swing of things

Well people's opinions on oil length and volumes differ, I guess I meant medium-medium dry.  When the backends are clean, the reign can appear to hook more than other balls because it conserves energy so well, esp out of the box finish, while other balls burn up in the front and middle parts of the lane.  I get over/under with mine on fresh, I'll usually go with the gamebreaker or second dimension.

The reign shines when you have to move in and open the lane up.  As long as there is some oil on the lane, it should be good.  Otherwise, ball down to a fast or something similar to that.

You cant swing a ball on a true heavy oil shot.

I have been saying since I first started throwing the REIGN that it absolutely is the most aggressive shiny pearl on oil I've ever thrown.  It so outhooks the TR PEARL, which I thought it would be comparable to, that it isn't even close.

But it still isn't the best choice on a true fresh flood.

Thanks for the reply

What makes it such a backend hook monster, but not good in heavy oil? Is it the coverstock? Or does it just roll out from revving to much down the lane on heavy oil?

The ball works very well in heavy oil if you throw a lot of ball
even if you dont it still is super strong on the backend
Ive used it on a heavy volume shark pattern just fine

depending on how you throw yes this ball can be super aggressive

for most people though a solid tends to work a little better on a heavy pattern

what are your specs
rev rate
speed etc. ?

So is the reign more a medium oil ball thats best used  once lanes break down, or is it more of a ball out of the bag for people

The reign is definately not a dry lanes ball at all. This ball is much stronger than people think. I used mine on a 44ft junior gold pattern at a tournament two weeks ago. It is definately a medium to heavy oil ball.

So would it compliment my DB in ANY way you think?? Even tho its got more hook potential and more aggressive, would it be a good choice for when my DB starts to roll early or should I look at something a little less aggressive. Or will just the fact of it being a completely different roll and being polished be enough for me to see a good difference

I guarantee you the Reign is not more ball than the Diamondback. The Reign can definitely hook on clean backends but it gets very good length and on heavier patterns this will show and the diamondback will be the better ball, just by watching reaction it will be obvious which ball would be the one to use.

Just make sure you keep up on maintaining the finish of the cover on the diamondback and the reign, keep them close to box finish to ensure them retaining their characteristics and doing their jobs properly.

Thanks mike, I thought the Reign was more aggressive backend, and the DB will be my ball out of the bag, for the first game or 2.. hopefully, cuz I really like it .. Its been so long since ive bowled, And I have NEVER bowled with more than 1 ball... for everything.( danger zone black ice ) . Now I have a DB, a T zone for the spares, and now am looking at another medium medium-heavy oil ball with a different look  so this is quite the change for me , so sorry to everyone for asking so many questions

Heres what I dont get .. A month ago when I got into this again, I thought you needed 4 balls . one for heavy, medium , and light oil, with another for once the lanes started breaking down.. Well Ppl are telling me now, I dont need a heavy oil monster like a 3.5, invasion etc.. And that my DB will be just fine 80% of the time.. So where does the rattler or reign fit in? It just seems like another medium oil ball like my DB but its polished thus just giving a different roll. So Why do you want a polished bal in the bag? Does it look past the front and midlane and just get to the breakpoint more effectively under lane conditions that are broken down ? And if thats the fact, doesnt carry down effect a polished balls performance ?
