New ball suggestions
« on: March 15, 2012, 08:06:44 PM »
I will begin by saying my knowledge of equipment is limited, so bear with me.  :)

I currently have equipment for heavy oil (Nano VG Solid) and light oil (Emerald Vibe).  I'm looking for a ball that is well suited for medium oiled lanes that would be a good complement to my existing equipment.  I would be using this in a THS for the most part, however I do bowl the occasional tournament as well.

I've become a fan of Storm recently, and have been looking through potential options, but am having difficulty determining what may be a good fit.  The Frantic and Victory Road Pearl caught my attention, however I'm afraid these may be relatively close to my Nano, and as such may not be a tenable option.

My ball speed is approximately 15.5 MPH, however I don't know what my rev rate is, though I've been told it's above average.

In case it's worth mentioning, I'm most comfortable playing an outside line between 5 and 10.

Can anyone provide suggestions or advice?  I appreciate any help you can provide.

The Victory Road is going to be much weaker than the Nano but stronger than the Emerald Vibe.  That would be a good choice for medium oil.  From there, I would look into a HyRoad or Crossroad for medium-heavy oil.  The Frantic is great but would be closer to your Emerald Vibe.

Don't be afraid to check out Storm's sister company Roto Grip as well.  The Bandit (medium oil) and Outlaw (medium-heavy oil) are great respectively.  Big difference between RG and Storm overall is that Storm usually is more skid/flip whereas RG reads slightly earlier and has more of an arc motion.

Awesome, thank you so much for the advice!  I'll certainly check out  the Roto Grip line as well.

There is a huge gap between a Nano Solid and an Emerald Vibe.  One is an early rolling solid and the other is a mid to late rolling pearl.  I'd look for something dead between the two from a cover and core perspective.

Best bet IMO is to look at a mid-level hybrid.  Hybrids give you the best of both worlds; easy through the heads and more arc / less snap in the backends.  Your Storm / Roto choices there would be a Hyroad, Crossroad, and a Nomad Dagger.  Given your description of your shot I am assuming you are a medium speed, medium revs. stroker.  For that type of bowler I'd recommend a Hyroad because it is the rolliest of the 3.  You can't go wrong with any of those hybrids though.
