Do these softer coverstock's soak up more oil than harder ones?
« on: January 24, 2005, 01:22:32 AM »
Just wondering if I'm gonna have trouble with balls like with the MONSOON cover on them dying in just a few amount of games since they have a softer cover on them... or are they just like the other regular coverstock's out there?

Do softer covers soak up more oil than regular harder covers? Or do they repel oil better than regular coverstock's? Which one is it in theory?

Or are all these covers basically the same as far as coverstock durability/longevity life?

Yup, reactives and particles have a softer, porous shell, and they suck oil. Lots of it! The MONSOON cover has a bad rep for dying soon.

Polished balls are a bit more secure, since their surface is waxed, but it will not help much. Particles and opened up surfaces (a.k.a. dull/sanded) are most likely to suck oil, and this hampers or even kills your ball performance over time. Polyesters are almost immune. The D-Rex scale is a good orientation. The softer the ball and the coarser its surface, the more likely it is to suck oil like a sponge.

Have your ball de-oiled. You can do it at home in your oven (low temperature! No heat shock or the coverstock might crack!) or put the ball in a bucket with warm/hot water and some detergent - see the various discussions in the surface prep area of this forum. You will wonder what your ball will ooze out, and it is not only lane conditioner, but also all kinds of dirt, machine oil, wax etc.

If you are not sure ask a local pro shop for help, there are professional machines for this purpose, for a fee.

De-oiling your ball will certainly change its performance and increase grip.

I bought "Doc's Magic Bowling Ball Elixir", treated my new Banshee and Track Slash with it.
Balls do not absorb lane oil, as far as I can tell. You have to wipe down the ball after each shot. I won't know if it prolongs the ball life for awhile. You get a little added length out of the ball.

The only Monsoon ball I have is the XXX, I have noticed NO loss in reaction in the year since I got it.  My brother has had a Super Charge for over year, it's his primary ball and he hasn't noticed any loss in reaction either.

Are you sure Monsoon has a bad rep for dying early?  It's easily the best cover on the market right now.  Easily.  I've had just about every ball that they've made with Monsoon on it, and have loved every single one.  I'm on my second Super Charge, and just found my way into a second Triple X last night.  It's incredibly durable, (it appears that the softness of the ball has more of a cushioning effect than a more easily scratchable surface like I had expected), and I haven't had one of them lose reaction yet.  I've had Accu-Tread die on me, but Monsoon so far has passed everything with flying colors in my book.  That's all besides the fact that it reminds me of urethane, albeit a beefed up version.  Even the pearl stuff is very predictable.

Not trying to be a smart mouth or start a bad fight or anything (because I'm a wus at heart)... but if you've never had one to die on you, why did you have to get replacements of those 2 balls? Different drilling? Surface prep?

Just curious?

Thanks!

Ric, I had the Triple X Extreme which has the Accu-Tread cover. (Sold it because I have dropped to 14#) I also have a Triple X with the Monsoon cover. I love both balls, but the Extreme with the Accua-Tread cover was always the first ball out of my bag. The Accu-Tread cover will handle more oil than the Monsoon cover. The Accu-Tread cover doesn't die, it simply needs periodical maintenance just like polished and pearlized balls need repolished every so often.(including the Monsoon cover on the Triple X) It does get shinny fairly fast and periodically I take a gray Scotchbrite Pad per Storm's instructions and very lightly buff the cover and Bingo, it is immediately back in NIB condition. I was getting to buy another Extreme (14#), and then came along the new Vertigo. The cover on it is very similiar to the Accu-Tread and longer lasting with less maintenance, so I am waiting on Storm to ship those balls to the distributors and then to the pro shops.
