I've seen both extremes on the Chameleon.  Aside from the surface itself, it all depends on who you're bowling against and what the weather is like that day how the shot will end up playing.  I had good luck rolling a Special Agent straight up 7-8 (shot a 268 doing that in practice one day!), and also throwing it with a small swing from 14 out to 10 once the shot got a bit broken down.  (I also had some very dry lanes one week when I had to prebowl on the Chameleon--the lanes had just been KILLED by a lot of bowling--and I was able to score very well hooking the crap out of my Spit Fire.  That was an exception to the rule though!)

The biggest key is really that the Chameleon is NEVER the same two games in a row.  Make sure you leave yourself plenty of options equipment-wise.  Try to bring at least two or even three medium to strong balls with a surface sanded around 1000 to 2000.

Are you intending for these balls to be used on PBA oil patterns, or house shots?  If you are going to be using them on tougher patterns like the PBA ones, you will have your best luck just going with a comfortable, predictable drill pattern.  Focus more on altering your ball reaction with surface.  You want the ball to not get squirty and jumpy when the oil starts transitioning.  Now, if you are bowling on house shots, that's a different story.
