Suggestions on where to place the HyRoad
« on: April 14, 2012, 03:41:12 PM »
I am picking up a HyRoad from a member of the site soon and was debating on where I should place it in the arsenal.  I've had a lot of success with hybrid covers and feel they fit my game better than most pearl reactives.

Here are my stats:  Speed 19-22mph, 380-420 revs, primary game is playing straighter but can cross the lane.  I also am considered low track and tend to stay behind the ball more.  My current arsenal with layouts are below:

Defiant: 3-1/2 x 5 x 3, used on heavy oil

919C: 4 x 4 x 2 with hole at P3, used with medium-heavy oil

Vital Energy: 5 x 4 x 3, pin drilled completely out, used with medium-heavy oil

505T: 4 x 4 x 2, pin above ring finger, used on medium oil

Brick:  4 x 4 x 1 with hole at P1, pin above ring finger, polished and used with medium-light oil

Early thoughts were to have the HyRoad as a step down from the Defiant.  However, a thought was to also place it between the 919C and Vital Energy.  Knowing the HyRoad has a stronger hybrid cover, what are your thoughts for where I can get the best out of this ball?

My Arsenal (as of February 2012)
Heavy Oil:  Roto Grip Defiant: 3000 AB
Medium-Heavy Oil: Track 919C: 3000 AB
Medium-Heavy Oil: Ebonite Vital Energy: 4000 AB

Medium Oil: Track 505T: 4000 AB

Medium-Light Oil: Hammer Brick: 2000 polished

You can't go wrong with this ball. I have a 16# pin-up and a 15# RICO. This ball has been around for 3 1/2 years and it's still going strong. The Hy-Road definitely deserves a place in bowling history...

In the bag the perfect STORM is about to be unleashed:

16# shells: T-Road Solid, Hy-Road, Frantic

15# shells: Virtual Gravity, Anarchy, Hy-Road, Rapid Fire Pearl

Drill it with your favorite layout, and then use it on a few different patterns. How it reacts compared to the other balls in your arsenal, is how it will fit in your arsenal. Too often, people put expectations on bowling balls, instead of just relying on the actual performance of the ball.

Thanks for the advice.  I think what will be done is to just use a 4x4x2 pin above layout which works well on multiple balls that I throw.  My guess is that it will most likely be versatile across multiple conditions and become a benchmark.

Once you drill it, you'll have a better sense for yourself.  However, given its versatility, my guess is that it will overlap a bit of the 919C, Vital Energy, and 505T in terms of conditions you may find it useful on.  It could cause a bit of confusion if you're not careful.  You don't want to add to your arsenal and then lose score because you weren't totally sure about it.  It's a good idea to really get some varied practice in and see for yourself.  You may find that you want to put one of the other balls down rather than just add...

Good luck, it's a great ball.  I keep two of my favorites, the HyRoad and Gamebreaker, in the basement because I just don't see high enough volumes to force their use.  I feel better "saving" them, than force myself to use them.  When I find medium or higher volumes, I love having them in the bag.
