Recommendation for speed and low rev
« on: October 08, 2007, 10:21:30 AM »
Sorry I'm kind of a novice in bowling.  I can hook the ball but I don't know all the technical terms.  I bowl every weekend on a wallshot synthetic, in usually dry to medium oil conditions.  I currently bowl with an Agent which is my second ball, and I really do love it, but somehow I feel like this ball isn't as well suited for my lane conditions as I thought.  My friends say my ball dies out occasionally unless I really get on it with my second style.  I'm also still trying to figure out which of these 2 styles I like better:

1) loose arm, fast speed down the lane, medium to low revs.  I come out of the ball late with minimal lift since i'm throwing it down so quickly with that loose arm.  I usually have very little axis.  And I hit 4th arrow standing 5 boards to the left of it (i'm Righty).  And the ball barely makes it back to the pocket, since its going so straight and fast with lil axis, yet it doesn't really go out that wide either, just deep.  Usually blasts the pins with that speed.

2) slower more controlled arm, release under/back of the ball and earlier (right near my feet), slower speed but I get more on the ball.  And if ball doesn't die out I get a huge move in the backend which blasts the pins.

I'm not sure which style I'm going to stick with but if guys could recommend a style and a ball for each technique that'd be great!

I'm currently looking at the T-road Pearl, Thunderstruck pearl (not sure of the difference), maybe Spit Fire, but I'm welcome to any recommendations, including just sticking to my Agent.

I dunno what it is but I love how clean my Agent is through the heads and how smooth it is through the mids and backend, its a really smooth ball but I'm not that experienced either.  I have seen the black widow pearl and T-road pearl (not thrown well though) in action and they're quite different.  But if anything I'll probably keep my Agent for medium to oily conditions.

First off, I would suggest something in a solid reactive.  When you rev it up, the ball is still more controllable off the breakpoint and yet when you go straighter and harder, the ball can still read the mids with proper surface prep and still give you some hook-ability.  With that being said, I would suggest a T-Road Solid.

eh, but T-road solid is recommneded for heavy oil, almost the opposite of what I'm looking for.  Wouldn't it just die out like how my Agent does sometimes?

if you think your ball doesnt have any energy by the time it reaches the pocket you should try polishing it up. if its already polished put some higher grit polish on it.

i use storm reacta shine for 1500 grit polish, and for a little more length I use bean's sauce.

on your styles, its hard for people to comment without really seeing what you are doing.

I would say that you are best keeping your revs and your speed matched up. you really notice a difference in carry when your revs/speed are matching well. It takes a lot less speed than most people think when they are starting. So whatever style you feel does that best is probably closer to what you want.

ron c has a really good multiple part article on ball releases.

Ok I like what Kleptic said about rev/speed matching and it makes sense so I'm going to stick to that.  If it came down to that I guess I'd be more of a medium rev, medium speed bowler, with Medium to low axis.  I mostly bowl on Medium to light oil, usually with some carrydown, wall shot synthetic.  I use 14 pound balls.  I usually stand middle dot (left foot big toe touching dot), and send it up 3->4th arrow.  With usually less hand in the ball (~80%).

So i've been reading up a lot on the different Storm balls and using that Match Maker thing, and for some reason it almost always keeps turning up SureFire. When I change it to Expert instead of Intermediate I keep getting ThunderStruck Pearl.  Does anybody know why they would recommend TSP for experts and SureFire for intermediates?  How accurate is that match maker thing?

So based on what I've decided in this post, do you guys think Thunderstruck pearl, T-road Pearl, or SureFire?  And what would be my line with each ball on Medium to light conditions to achieve that reaction I describe below?

I plan on pulling out the Agent for Medium to heavier Oil conditions so I would like a nice compliment for it on the medium to light conditions.

I'm looking for something on Dry/Light to medium Oil, that will get me super clean through the heads like my Agent does but doesn't waste as much energy in the mids as my Agent, and just stores up a BOATLOAD of energy for my backend.  I never see my pins flying all over the place with messengers so I'm Really looking for that reaction!

The Match Maker thing is a waste of time.  It always puts me into a Special Agent even on light oil!!
