Tearing of skin on hand, span/pitch issue? Wrist hurting?
« on: February 08, 2016, 03:53:12 PM »
I have went to 2 different pso's. One I've been going to for the past year, the other I tried once a few months ago. My normal pso measured my span at 4 1/16 and 4 1/8 cut to cut. The other measured me much shorter. I tried the shorter span and felt it was too short and uncomfortable. So I stuck with the guy I've been going to. Recently I've been trying to change things to bowl more conventionally. I'm having issues where the skin on the tip of my ring finger is tearing off. It's not exactly.on the tip, it's like on the corner of my nail and down the side of it. Idk if it's a problem with my span/pitch, or if I'm trying to over rotate in the ball of something. And also just this past week I tore a good chunk of skin off the back side of my thumb? The thumb hole isn't tight and it's a switch grip with no tape or anything so not sure how that happened. Also lately I can't even bowl because my wrist hurts like hell! It doesn't hurt any other time than bowling so I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong in my release or not. But it hurts, after the first couple of frames yesterday in the first game out of three I could barely pick the ball up. My hand is rather small and I don't have much of a grip on the ball because of it, some of you guys with bigger hands can hold the ball more than me  I feel when I bowl it puts a lot of force on my wrist which is why it hurts. Any suggestions?

You are asking folks to cure your problem without seeing and measuring you.  Nobody can do that.  But, if you want some wild guesses for answers, then all of us can do that.  My wild guess is your span is too long, Maybe you  are too weak to hold the ball properly (maybe too heavy a ball), so you are gripping the ball.    Lot's of things, but maybe you need to return to the shop where the guy shortened your span.

For the overall grip, it sounds to me that you may need to have the pitches and/or the span changed a little bit.  When I switched PSO's several years ago, the overall span was good but did have a problem where my ring finger and/or my thumb would tear more often than not.  After being remeasured by my current PSO, I ended up having my thumb pitch changed slightly (more forward pitch).  On top of that, my ring finger now gets sanded a bit more once drilling is complete to prevent some tearing on the side of the finger that had happened.  It's very rare that I tear anything now because I'm not having to grip the ball.

As for the wrist issue, if checking/changing the grip doesn't work, I would probably seek the advice of a orthopedic doctor.  Even though fit could be part of it, you could have something such as a strained tendon, partially torn tendon, tendonitis, muscle issue, or something else.   One thing that I have used ever since my wrist injury is a neoprene wrist support.  It helps provide additional support while still being breathable and helped manage some of the soreness.  The one I currently use is this: https://www.bowling.com/products/storm-neoprene-wrist-support.htm

Good luck with everything.

You need to just get it into your mind that you will have to sacrifice one ball to multiple slugging/plugging and redrilling until you find the best fit for you.  It's not about how the ball reacts for you after all the redrilling, it is how it fits you and how it feels off your hand.  You can worry about reaction after that.

A certified coach can tell you if it is a release issue and might be able to tell you if the fit looks close.

Been considering sarge easter grip or bowling 2 handed. Practiced some more today and my wrist absolutely kills. It hurts so bad

Storm, just one last shot.....There is a proper way to hold, support the ball, and deliver it.  If your technique is to grip and throw, you will never get a "proper" fit.  Hopefully there is someone in your area that knows how to properly hold and deliver the ball.   Search him or her out.   If you understand how to hold and support, deliver the ball, fit becomes a bit secondary.   The bowlers who understand this, all they want is the holes to be big enough for their fingers and thumb.  One last warning, don't be fixated on a "perfect" grip.  There is no such thing.

Sounds like you need to let your wrist heal. I remember I had wrist pain it was not due to releasing or anything it was just over bowling too much my wrist muscles were not prepared. I bought the storm neoprene wrist thing that help alot, but nothing beats good ole one or two month break for my wrist to heal correctly.
