Thinking about switching to Storm
« on: August 23, 2017, 02:41:39 PM »
If I were to switch to Storm, what balls would be good replacements for an Ebonite Warrior Elite, Mission Unknown (black), Game Breaker 2 Phenom Pearl and a Hammer
Viral Hybrid?

Thanks for the help.

Yeah it's a great ball if you want to do anything other than score.

Surprised to hear you say that about the IQ Tour. Such a great ball to see what the pattern is doing. I can always adjust based on what I see from my IQ Tour. On the sport patterns ball is money for me.

Using the IQ Tour this past weekend on White #2, I won $ in 3 of 4 pot games, won high game, and won the eliminator.  As long as the $ keep coming in, I will continue to use it to SCORE on tougher-than-THS conditions.

Score is all relative. I think Luke was saying that you're not going to shoot lights out when the scoring pace is high, but the tougher they are, the better that ball is.

Personally, my IQs have also shot the lights out when the scoring pace is high. On the flip side, I can't seem to find any house around here where I can score with my Hyroad, which is a house shot killer for many. It either slides too much in oil or takes off on friction. I did just get a Hustle INK, which is touted as a weaker Hyroad, and had 300/766 first set I've used it in league. For me and my style, high diff balls have their time and place, but weaker, low diff balls are much much more versatile.

Saying a ball can't score is so bowler-specific and condition-specific, its not even worth saying. There are plenty of THS out there where a more rounded shape actually does carry best, and plenty of bowlers for whom a low diff core rolls best.

Admittedly, it does surprise me that the people leading the anti-IQ movement are such experienced and accomplished bowlers that are typically well aware that different balls work for different people. I'm not sure why that seems to apply to everything but the IQ, but it's a silly, subjective debate regardless.

Looking at the actual topic at hand, if the OP just wants to match the shapes he's currently getting from his EBI family balls, leftybowler had it about right. The IQ Tour doesn't fit for anything that particular bowler seems to be looking to do.

I have to ask what Steven asked, what are you trying to accomplish that you are not getting with the equipment you have currently? That the smartest question asked so far.

As far as the Tour goes, Ive put a lot of them in peoples bags and the only time anyone complains is because they are used to the boomerang reaction that storm gives. Its a low rg and diff solid ball. Layouts for some will be key (meaning that youre favorite layout may not work at all) and surface adjustments will fine tune. It doesn't cover boards and asking it to will award you a lot of corner pins. High rev players I suggest drill it strong and weight on the midline to pull the PSA away from the thumb without giving up too much too fast, lower holes will make it puke. Lower revs I suggest strong pins no weightholes or pin downs low holes (say 2" down the VAL) to straighten the angle. Its very good piece for a wide variety of bowlers and lane conditions but its just a different shape than people expect.

To give insight, my first IQ Tour is drill pin above the bridge CG in the palm (85x5.5"x30). The motion was very early and calm on the back part of the lane and wrapped corner pins. After some games and some surface changes (500-4000) I felt iffy about the ball,.... until I went to league and came out the gate 289-234-220. As the lanes dried out and I chased in the shape stayed the same. This was bad because the ball doesn't want to corner from deeper in so I learned that once I got to a certain area of the lane it was time to go to something to give me more overall ball motion or a different shape (Mostly went to the Reign afterwards). On sport patterns, I use (360-1000) on the same ball and have the same shape as I would on THS. AVGed 200 in that sport league across 3 different patterns using majorly the IQ Tour. Considering I aved 190 the year before, I'd say that was a good thumbs up moment for the Tour. It has been a mainstay in my bag ever since just changing the surface to fit the volume of the pattern. That's not to say that the ball will fit everyone but I just don't think we need to dismiss it. Its gotta be somewhat good if Brunswick emulates it down to the color scheme.

Hank, you ABSOLUTELY nailed it, well stated. I will always feel as I e statwd MANY times that smoother, med/med/moderate diffs are needed more today, due to the extreme friction by the higher rev/speed/ high friction balls.

Equipment of all types will be based on the BOWLERS' STYLE and matchup, NOT about what hooks the most.

Might be why pieces like the IQ Tour stay available for years.

Yes it is exactly as I've mentioned all along; No doubt about it. All anybody has to do is imagine ALL EQUIPMENT that's all high end, and all high/low rg along with all high differential, and tell me how it works out for everyone, NOT SO WELL AT ALL.

Low RG, High diff stuff on a pearl can be used on house shot fairly well (Scandal Pearl for example) but yeah my low RG, high diff, high mass bias oiler Stealth Bomber mostly sits in the closet for tournaments or perhaps sports patterns if ever get ambitious.  Have a fair amount of both low RG and low diff and high RG (2.75+ on red razor lol) and low diff stuff because such a urethane fan but I hear ya.  Often surprises me how strong my urethane stuff is even with my more speed dominant style.

I think a good Storm arsenal can be accomplished with 3 balls in the current lineup.  If you are a league bowler thats all you need.  It depends on the house you bowl at and your style but for the wall shot league, I'd do this:

Phase 2,
iQ Tour,
Marvel Pearl.

You could consider a RotoGrip Daredevil in there too.

All symmetric and all take surface very well.  You can bowl on anything with that setup.

For what's it worth, last night in practice I was rolling my Hy Road, No Rules Solid, and the new Hot Cell back to back.

The Hy Road hits the pins harder than anything I've ever rolled and it just makes a different sound when hitting the pins.  The Hy Road is an aluminum bat hitting a baseball.  All others are a wood bat hitting a softball.

Were you looking in my bowling bag? I have that exact lineup plus a spare ball in my bag.

Have mostly Hammer stuff but made room for a Hy-Road and IQ Tour in arsenal (two best Storm balls ever made IMO).  So far glad I did.

In my house, all of those would be in the left gutter.  I am considering a Hustle Ink and wondering how many boards it can cover effectively.

I agree, need something weaker in there like the Match Up or even a Hyroad/Hyroad pearl. Depending on the bowlers style, the IQ Tour can still cover some boards and over read the fronts on light volumes of oil for slow speed, rev dominate players. I have yet to throw any of the Hustle balls. They seem fairly strong though, based on observations.
