Thoughts on Optimus solid?
« on: December 16, 2015, 06:09:23 AM »
Considering adding a Optimus Solid to the bag, but haven't seen anything on it recently in search. Looking for feedback on amount of oil it can handle , smooth and early vs cleaner and later, versatility...

Is it a hit or miss, particularly on medium oil for low rev players?
Thanks in advance

I didn't think much of it til my buddy got one and is seriously putting up solid numbers for the past 1-2 months.

I feel it's a marvel with a lil bit more potential off the spot and a different hook shape. I see a very benchmark type reaction..a lil different than the pearl... U get to see it really rev up in the midlane.  He gets to use it all 3 games without any issues which baffles me.

It is a med-heavy shot with much in the middle and an out of bounds outside of 5/6

He is low-medium revs, 16-17mph ...up the boards...imagine a THS DUKE with loft. Bowling on guardian.

Ball was a surprise...I didn't think it was any good and now I want one

I have seen many places "blowing" the Optimus Solid out for $109.99 SHIPPED as the original is still priced at the normal price. Makes one wonder if A) the ball is not selling well or B) the ball is lost within Storm because of the amount of good equipment.

I have one and love it. Does everything Billdozer described above. Thinking about picking up one or more to keep NIB.

The Optimus Solids that I've seen have been really, really smooth; they almost remind me of the IQ Tour in that they tend be early and without a huge move on the back end. If that's what others have seen as well, that could be your answer right there. Balls like that are niche balls, something that is really only appreciated by tournament bowlers. I know that I hated my IQ Tour Solid on house shots, but I loved it when the lanes were tough. Since most bowlers are simply house/league players, there may not have been a need for both the IQ Tour Solid, which everyone already loves as a tournament piece, and the Optimus Solid.

Do you see a need to have both the Optimus Solid and IQ Tour on tougher conditions?

There's no way those two overlap.

Theres decent gap between r2s with a tour diff core...versus r2x with a strong core.

acknowledging that the ball comparison tool at Storm's website is more marketing tool than anything;  if you compare the IQ tour to the optimus solid the reaction lines shown are remarkably similar.

Agreed with the misleading marketing tool. In a real world test, no way is the Tour IQ and Solid Optimus that close. Not a chance.

Now, if I changed the surface on the Optimus Solid to 4000 or higher, and changed the surface on the IQ Tour to 1000 or so, maybe we would be close. Maybe.

I'm just saying I'd be balling down logically in almost every situation from the option solid to the tour solid.

The tricky option or question really is...where does the tour nano fit in...

The crystal clear to me, really sorry if u don't understand the product line...opti solid is stronger than the tour solid.

R2X is stronger than the R2S ...

Again, I was simply basing my response off of what I've seen first hand, so that needs to be taken with a grain of salt due to differences in centers, lane surfaces, conditioners being used, machines, etc. I guess I thought that was fairly obvious, but maybe I should've said so to make it crystal clear.

I understand the product lines and the like; but there are other variables to consider.

in my sport league, a very good bowler (205+, in sport league) uses both the IQ Tour and Optimus solid and an army of other balls.  he gets a similar look on the lanes with both balls.  AND, on most conditions the IQ Tour hooks more.  I have no idea what surface prep either has, or the drilling used.  He is about to ditch the optimus solid because it is too similar.

this is the only person I have seen throw the optimus solid.

The IQ Nano, I would assume is stronger than both the OS and IQ Tour.  or at least better in heavier volumes of oil.

I expected the Optimud Solid to be like a Gamebreaker. My teammates that have one said it reads at your feet and then bails in the backend.

With an aggressive core and cover, if the drill is aggressive as well, you have a very specific condition ball. I threw a 5 inch to PAP pin on the ball (pin above fingers) and left the cg in the palm and the ball gets through the heads decent and has plenty of pop on the backend.

I suspect your teammates are using a too aggressive cover/ball/drill combo and need something not as aggressive. I would also suspect a heavier pattern would yield different results for your teammates with the Optimus Solid.

Updating this thread... I decided to go ahead and get one. Threw it Wednesday for the first time in games 2 and 3. Right out of the gate 250/230, with great pop at the pins... Need more games to tell for sure of course, but I liked what I saw so far...
