Have your thumb hole made bigger, and use tape if necessary.

stop squeezing....chances r ur hole is too big
see below

hole too big = you squeeze
you squeeze = pressure on your thumb
pressure on your thumb = swelling and ripping

relax ur hand....let the ball roll of ur fingers

Any of these, and check the bevel and the thumb hole pitch. If you use "tons of tape", it must be a basic problem that your thumb does not exit the ball properly.

Have you tried Ron's magic carpet? I just got some and I think it's worth a try. It gives you a consistent snug feeling even if your thumb swells.
Read this and decide it for yourself: http://www.bowl4fun.com/magiccarpet/magiccarpet.htm

Your thumb problem happens with everyone, so don't worry to much.  If you can't get into your ball when you start bowling, then squeeze the knuckle to reduce the swelling.  It gets some of the blood out of the finger so that the swelling reduces.  And if you're hand is ripping up to a bloody stump, RELAX!!!  Stop squeezing!
