Thunderstruck v. Spit Fire
« on: August 08, 2007, 02:09:59 AM »
Hello all,

I am looking to purchase a Storm mid-performance ball to add to my small arsenal [C300 White Dot and "old" Scout/R] for a Hi-Lo league this fall that will have have medium oil on the lanes. This will be my first league experience.

I am a RH, Stroker with medium revs. I am a straight bowler, where I want the ball to go long with an arc into the pocket.

I'm looking at the Thunderstruck or Spit Fire. I would opinions on which ball would best. If either the Thunderstruck and/or Spit Fire, is not a wise choice. Which Storm ball would be a better consideration?

Billy

I do not have a spit fire, but I really liked my thuderstruck for a down and in shot.  I also like my Domination to play that similar line.

If you are looking for an earlier roll and controlled arc rather than skid/snap, the solid reactive Thunderstruck is going to fit that bill better than the pearl Spit Fire (especially when the Spit Fire comes polished out-of-box).  However, the Spit Fire does have a good bit of mid-lane reaction and is a very versatile ball.  It will also probably be a slightly more aggressive ball and hook a few more boards than the Thunderstruck.

Dan,

Any big differences between a Jolt Solid and the Thunderstruck Solid?

Thanks for your input, it is helping me with solidifying my decision. The house where the league is taking place in September is a Brunswick synthetic lane.

the Jolt will be a step down from the Thunderstruck in the midlane and at the breakpoint. The T will handle oil better and will have a stronger move off the breakpoint, a hard arc.

[That is if they are both polished of course. The Jolt will have a smoother reaction off the dry spot]

the Solid Jolt compared to the Spit Fire, well my Spit Fire was drilled weak so I'm not sure if I can help you there, but the SF would likely handle less oil than the Jolt but have a quicker response once it gets to the dry spot.

It depends on what you're bowling on. If you want it to go long and arc, all these balls can do that based on drilling =p  I would suggest possibly a pin up Thunderstruck solid or a pin up Jolt solid. Again, ask your drill what he/she may refer you to, as this is only coming through the internet and we can't see you bowl or the environment that you bowl in.

I have had both the Spit Fire and the Thunderstruck Solid and if I had to choose one I would definitely choose the Thunderstruck Solid.  I still use this ball all the time and I gave the Spit Fire to a friend.  The Spit Fire is a great ball (many people will agree) but it didn't serve the role I was trying to fill with it.

I am I guess a power stroker and I also prefer an arc.  This Thunderstruck Solid gives you kind of a "hard arc" so it is nice as a straighter ball when there is oil but you can also easy move in with it and feed it out there if you need to.  I have found this to be a very versatile ball and it still fills that "everything" role and then I have a couple more balls set up to fill specific roles.

Again, this is just speaking from my experience.  I don't know if it is me matching up to the ball better or the ball itself.  If I had a spare ball and a Scout, I would get a Thunderstruck Solid.

The Spit Fires I have seen are heavy rolling big snap pearls.

The Thunderstruck pearl is a long ball smooth but snappy pearl at the back.

Want to cover a lot of boards with snap Spit Fire.  Cover fewer boards with a nice snap...Thunderstuck Pearl.  Smoother...thunderstruck solid.
