Depth Charge vs Eraser Pearl Particle
« on: September 05, 2004, 12:29:53 AM »
I love my EPP, but my pro shop guy is willing to give me a good deal on a barely used Depth Charge, and I wanted to see if it would fit in between my Animal and EPP as far as covering medium/heavy shots. From what I've read the Depth Charge makes more of a sharper turn at the back than the EPP, any other differences that I need to know about? Would this be a good ball to add to the bag in relation to what I have or overlap too much? Any suggestions are welcome.

My Depth Charge's turn into the pocket is more gradual (but stronger overall) than my EPP's.  Since acquiring the DC, I've put the EPP away because they're too close in reaction and strength for my typical league house shot.  I carry only 2 balls plus plastic to league, so there's no room for my EPP.

While I don't own either, some basic information about these balls might help you with your decision:

The DC has a significantly lower RG than the EPP; so it will rev-up a lot quicker. The DC also has a slightly higher load of particles (3% vs 2%, I believe) ; so, with the same cover/surface finish, it will handle higher amounts of oil than the EPP.
The DC also has a higher RG Differential, which is probably what makes it hook more at the backend; it is also more continuous, once it starts hooking.

If you drilled the DC slightly stronger than the EPP, you should easily see that it is a stronger ball overall and meant to be almost a complpete step up from the EPP. Of course, this also means you have to use each ball on its proper oil pattern for the amount of hand you have and your ball speed.

Good luck.

Maybe that's why it appears that my DC has more of an arc than my EPP.  Due to its lower RG, it hooks earlier.

Charlest I have moderate hand and you have described my DC it revs easily and has a good strong hook, continuous roll all the way to the pocket and hits hard. The pattern here is 24' buffed to 42' and I stand 30 out to 9(I am not completely rev challenged) I cum more up the back and have a high track:
                                .
                              o o
                                cg
                               o
Pin - 2 3/4
Hand grip - 4 3/4

Yes they cover very similar conditions as said before depth charge very even,

Eraser Pearl particle has a little jump at back.

I like EPP much better.  I wouldn't have both as they cover near same territory!

Debs, and LuckyLefty,

It almost sounds as if you're using both balls on the same oil pattern, a light one more suited for the EPP. I wonder if you tried them both on a heavier oil pattern, like medium to medium-heavy, maybe then, the DC would have more backend and better hit and the EPP would seem to skid too far. Just wondering.

Charlest,

You're right.  Though I've never used the two balls simultaneously, I've bowled on a heavier pattern where the EPP went too long, which is why I purchased the DC.  I don't have much hand, so even on a somewhat lighter pattern, I can move in a bit with the DC and it will come roaring back into the pocket.  I don't have enough trust in my ability (or the EPP) to do that with the EPP.  The DC is my favorite ball because duller balls tend to roll out on me and strong, shiny resins have too much skid/flip.

BTW, I shot a 298 with my EPP!

Thanks for all the insight into the differences between the two balls. I may pick up the Depth Charge then, as I have noticed that when the condition got a little heavier on my summer league shot, the EPP struggled to make it through the oil and although I was hitting the hole consistently, I left a lot of back row pins. I think if I go with the stronger drilling it will sit nicely between the Animal I just got and the EPP...

As always with any ball, it depends on the lane conditions. I have never thrown the EPP. I do have the Depth Charge. I just made a review/post on the Depth Charge a few days ago. Go to the Ball Manfactures Column on the left and click on "Storm" and read my review. Even though this ball has a low RG, it is just short of a flip for me. Again, I have low revs which might be the difference between it almost flipping for me and arcing for someone else. Again lane conditions come into play here.

I've never thrown the EPP, but I buy mostly low RG balls, and I enjoy a lot of success with medium and low load particle balls.  I've never seen a low RG particle ball of any size particle load go longer and turn sharper than the Depth Charge.  It does not behave like any other low RG particle ball I've ever thrown.

I got mine too close to the end of the league season last year to draw a definitive conclusion as to whether I liked it or not.  Summer conditions are too odd and unpredictable (at least where I bowl) for me to have decided yet.  I've got the DC's surface prepped to fit in between the balls where I want it.  It remains to be seen whether I will be able to take advantage of what this ball has to offer.  It is flippier by a significant degree than what I usually use.  I expect to see the right condition for the DC within the first couple weeks of league, so I should be able to decide soon whether it's move suits me or not.

I have a DC, and find it to be a very forgiving and very easy to throw. It will handle most conditions you will face with the exception of heavy and longer patterns. Mine has a 2.75" pin drilled pin under ring and the CG at a 30* angle right of the center grip line. It is a very smooth early rolling "truck", handles a good bit of carry down, has a big wide turn and continuous. I usually bowl on fresh crown shot, with 50 units in the center and tapering off to 18 at the 2 arrow, I can usually begin at 34 and swing it out to 8 with a very predictable heavy arcing movement, and have yet to encounter a radical over/under reaction. I've added a top coat of 2000 grit degree polish to gain a bit more length since our heads tend to dry up by the end of the 2nd game.
