Original Eraser
« on: November 18, 2010, 05:48:16 AM »
Anyone remember the spec's for the original Eraser. Ball was sold longer than any piece in Storms catalog yet even their website only shows the PBT. Still have one in the bag but would like to do some comparisons to modern products for future replacement.

One thing you guys need to remember is that lane oils have changed with ball technology and some of the covers on old stuff will really struggle on current oils.  (This comes from a guy who has kept balls for several years -- think my oldest right now is a PARADIGM and BARBED WIRE.)

That may be the case with the oil changing, but the coverstock on the paradigm is not weak at all. I have 3 paradigm passions and boy do they hook in the oil and especially in the dry. You also have to remember that surface has a lot to do with the reaction in the oil and in the dry.

You want to know what my best ball is for the 40 ft flat nationals shot is? It is my second weakest ball and that is my too hot drilled straight up label with 4k abralon. Now I don't know if you are into maintaining a balls surface, but most people don't pay attention to that and then wondering why a ball dies out or doesn't hook after awhile. Plus, they are not reading the lane properly and using the wrong ball and surface prep. I also have an x-factor deuce and even though the accu-tread cover is weaker than the new stuff, I can still play with that ball on the shark pattern, so in reality it depends on a lot more than just the coverstock of a ball and lane oil.

Comparing a couple of "newer" Storm balls to the Original Eraser drilled about the same way.

Eraser is only 1-2 boards weaker than my Hy-Road overall, good go to ball when the Hy-Road starts breaking early.

Eraser is 1-2 boards stronger then my Rapid Fire Pearl, Eraser makes a better move in the back than my Rapid Fire Pearl.

But, it's going to depend on the oil used and drilling of the balls, this is just what I see and my Eraser has about as many games if not less then my Hy-Road.

Back when mine was new I used it on THS shots for fresh or at least medium shots. Now it is my second set travel league or drier condition ball. Only ball in my bag not made by 900 Global. The carry is as good or better than when it was new, but it set in the box for a long time since I used 16's and this was a left over from one year when my Storm rep wanted me to try 15's for a year. That didn't work so next year we drilled all new 16's including a 16 pound Eraser that I later sold by accident intending to sell the 15. I have drilled a lot of different balls over the years looking for a ball that matches what this one can do on dried conditions and have not got close yet. I started this one looking for the specs. I have asked Storm and since have emailed them a photo and serial number. Should get an answer early next week for sure.

I also rolled the Erase-It back at the time and it was a good ball as well. The pearl was overall a better more versatile ball though. I have the particle pearl version setting in the box and rolled some nice sets with it back in the mid 2000's on fresh conditions. The photo at least on the Storm web is the newer particle pearl version, though the spec could be correct will know more next week.

River700, I like how you added your comments so they appear to be mine LOL.

You make good points about surface prep -- that's the dominant factor in ball reaction in combo with coverstock type.

And FYI -- PARADIGM cover IS weaker than what Storm is putting out now with R2 and R3 variants. But PARADIGM cover isn't really "weak" -- it's strong than 95 percent of what has been developed in bowling history. I still sue mine but do find it struggling on some oils in last year or two. Do love the ball and would hate to completely give it up!

Tue eraser had a weak orange scent. Some were stronger than others first ball run with the smell idea. The boost which was grape and blaze that was blackcherry. Came our before the particle pearl. Both were awesome pieces.

Well, I am still getting use to how to post a response with a quote..lol! Any way, the solid OEX cover is stronger than the pearl version for sure. I guess if you put 4k or 2k abralon on the pearl version it would be comparable? You are right in saying that the OEX is weaker than the new stuff but actually fits nicely under the newer coversBut, the Rad + core is almost the strongest core storm has made so far.

Official word from Storm is that the photo for the Eraser in their Classic balls is incorrect, but specification are right. The cover name sounds like some type of particle, but it was just a pearl resin.

I have an original Eraser that will always have a home in my bag. Like others have said, i have had to tweak the cover a bit over time, but it is still very usable on most THS and shorter sport patterns for me.

The hit and carry of this ball is just as good as it ever was, and like others it still gets plenty of length, and a nice move on the back. I cant see myself ever getting rid of this ball, it is still that good. I have tried to limit resurfacings with it to last longer, and use it on those drier occasions I might hit.

The original Eraser and the Eraser Particle Pearl were both blue and gold, the balls are easy to confuse. The original one had an Accu-Tread Pearl cover (same as e. g. the Trauma), while the EPP had "Pro-Thane LT", which effectively was Accu-Tread Pearl with a light load of soft particle. Both had, AFAIK, the same core, which gave it the PBT suffix. It was one of the ball's engravings, though.

The original is actually a darker blue and orange. The particle pearl is light blue and gold. Still have one of each just the particle pearl is a 16. Only issue with my original is in the last couple months the bridge finally cracked. Not bad after over 10 years. Didn''t hurt the carry any, ball still hits great just takes a little drier lanes than when it was new.

bowler0821 you are right about the orange scent on the eraser.  the boost is blueberry scent and the rapid fire is grape.  i still have and use both occasionally.  threw my only 300's with the boost.

One of the best balls I've ever used. The partical pearl version was nearly as good. I've shot big games with both of those balls.
