Tropical questions

I just picked up a tropical for my wifes first finger tip ball.  Any suggestions for the drilling???  She doesn't want a big hook.  She is getting a 11 lb....She is used to throwing a 10 lb....her speed is kinda slow too.

Did she use a reactive ball before or polyester?  I ask because the statement 'she doesn't want a big hook' and you are changing her from a conventional to a fingertip at the same time may be contradictory.  Also, does she get any side turn at all with her current equipment?

Be careful, many lazier pro shop guys will use the 'pin right cg centered' works for most people move.  IMO that layout makes it harder on first time fingertip grip / reactive bowlers because it makes the ball too skip/flippy - even with an 11 lb. Tropical with a basic weightblock.  I would usually look to lay out a first time ball like that more of a 5-6" x 3-4" control layout.

She has a conventional ball now...  She throws an old plastic 10lb straight ball.  She wants to move to a hook ball.  but not major...  Maybe that helps.  Thanks for the input...mabye this changes your thoughts though.

I think that your wife will like if not love the Tropical Storm. This ball will not hook out of the building so you are safe there (well unless the bowl doesn't oil for a few days) I would suggest drilling the pin under the ring finger and the cg marker in the center grip. Pretty standard I guess. Just go out there and have a good time. Keep that plastic ball around too comes in handy on those corner pin spares.

If you're pressing the issue of changing grip to fingertip, a lot of times that ball will end up being plugged and put back to conventional within a few months.

she is the one who is wanting to change to a finger tip ball.  i am trying to do a little specific research for her on the ball to make it work for her.  thanks for the info reno...  i figured that she can start with a mild ball then she will know what she wants from there.  she is pumped about changing to the new ball...

Depending on the pin distnance, I'd also either go with "pin under fingers and CG in palm/stacked" for a short pin, or just use a label drilling (CG in palm, pin kicked out towards the unknown PAP in a safe position around the ring finger) - since your wife probably has no defined PAP yet and is just getting accustumed to a fingertip ball, this is IMHO a safe solution where you cannot do much wrong.

thats kinda what i was thinking. go with a generic drill and keep it simple for the first drill

I'd go with the former.  I have seen way to many bowlers throwing their first reactive ball with that pin kicked out in a general direction drill and the ball ends up being uncontrollable.

Well, took the wife out today for her 1st go at a finger tip ball (tropical).  And.......she did pretty damn good!!!  She was bowling, for the most part, her avg.  The lanes were broke down and aweful...  She was able to control it and had a decent hook happenin'.  She threw more strikes than she has ever done in three games.  Now we are going back to work on a little consistantcy.... I am very proud of her...  She is pumped about taking on this new challenge of throwing a finger tip ball, now!!!  She saw the pins explode several times and was kinda wowwed by it...  I'm sure she will be wanting an oil ball before too long.....lol.....  I've started another one!!!!
