Trying to Pick a Storm Ball to try
« on: July 06, 2011, 04:29:19 AM »
Hello everyone, I have noth thrown storm in over 5 years and considering trying a few balls.  I am considering the Victory Road Pearl, the Virtual Energy, and the Virtual Gravity.  Can you tell me your thoughts on each of these balls and how they react.  And between the Victory Road Pearl and the Virtual Energy which one would you pick overall. I throw about 17mph, medium to high medium revs, but not a cranker.  Looking for mild house shot and 2nd shift ball.

Thanks

I'm not a big VG fan, so I will skip giving an opinion on that one. You can't go wrong with the VE or Victory Road. Both have a very pronounced move when they hit friction. The VE will handle a bit more oil and will cover more total boards from my experience. The Victory Road has the most back end I have seen, it's pretty much whiplash when it turns the corner, but almost all that movement comes at once when it finds friction.

If I was buying two balls, I would get the VE and Victory Road. But if only buying one ball, I would go with the VE as it will be the most flexible of the two.

Just an opinion from someone who owns all three of these balls.

What HE said!

Yeah, I think the VE is the most versatile of the three balls in handling oil and being able to play on a lite oil shot. Of what I have seen of the VE, it is a very rolly, hard-hitting piece. The VG is for me, a rolly ball with an extremely strong and pronounced move on the backend, almost a snap to the pins. It is the one I use on hvy oil and med-hvy stuff, but I have relatively slow speed when bowling.

Started not to respond but figured you needed to here all sides.

How a ball reacts to friction is determined for the most part by layout and surface finish. I have three virtual gravitiesband two virtual energies. All things being equal the energy will be longer and more angular on the backend.

The virtual gravity would be my choice because it is more versital. Oob it is smooth, rolls early and handles medium to heavy. Polish it and it gets longer and more angular on the back almost identical to then ritual energy. Step it up fro
1000 to 2000 to 4000 with or without polish and you have a great medium to medium light ball or second shift ball. Also it is easy to read and will let you know when it is time to put it up.

I also have a nano and have yet to figure it out.

Those that can do. Those that can't complain. Pimpin ain't easy, but it's mandatory.

Victory Road hands down!!!  That ball is phenomenal and I am not even a Storm fan!  Did you see what Ryan Shafer did with it during the Shootout?

Virtual Gravity is one of the best balls I have thrown, and if you look at the sales many would agree.  I didn't care as much for the VE, I liked the Anarchy better.  I haven't  thrown the other.

Coming from my un-biased point of view, I would strongly recommend the Victory Road. Dollar for dollar one of the best buys on the planet.

As many have stated above... For the price point along with performace I would go with the Victory Road.

I currently own one of the biggest storm/roto arsenals known to man, etc. and I feel that the Victory Road may just be the best ball I have ever thrown. I have had the oppurtunity to throw thousands of balls too as many people know, so I kinda know what I am talking about here. Also out of the three you mentioned, the Victory Road will have the most energy in the back as the other two may burn up pretty bad at times.

I tell you what, shoot me a message and I can hook you up with a  single drilled one that has a 4 1/2 inch span and 15lbs.so forth.

ONE SIDE NOTE:THE VICTORY ROAD ALSO SMELLS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! John

Ironman -

I have my Victory Road drilled at 75 x 5 x 35 which is  great on medium oil conditions.  It's one of my favorite balls and the strong back end is awesome.   My HY-Road is my medium - heavy oil ball with much more midlane read and not a sharp backend.     I like the combination as it gives me options depending on lane conditions and entry angle into the pin deck.

So would you say marvel pearl-hyroad-victory road a suitable arsenal, plus plastic? Rarely do I need an oiler like the nano.. 16mph, 275 revs. Worried if VR will be too much ball and would have to ball down to a heat hybrid.

I can't speak to the marvel pearl as I have not thrown it.    I am a fan of the HY-Road and Victory Road combination you mentioned.   However, I think you need a medium dry ball below the Victory Road for times the lanes are burned up.

My rule of thumb is to use solid reactive coverstocks for heavy oil, hybrid coverstocks for medium oil and pearl coverstocks for medium to dry.   So, my lineup at the moment is (1) Nano or Theory for heavy oil,  (2) HY-Road for medium to medium-heavy oil, (3) Victory Road or Mutant Cell Pearl for medium oil and (4) Midnight Vibe for medium to dry oil.  Hope it helps

I would absolutely go with the Victory Road Solid.   It's a really good choice for medium conditions and would fit as a benchmark ball.  The VG Nano is a great piece, and I find it works really well with heavier volume/longer patterns.  However, the key with this ball is making sure it has oil to work with or it will just die out on the backend leaving flat 10s.  Most times, I can only get away with using it 1-2 games because the carrydown will force me to put it away and go with something else (usually down to my Anarchy).

I would also take a look at Roto Grip, which is Storm's other brand.  There are a lot of quality pieces in there where you can mix/match different reactions.  On medium oil, I have a Nomad Dagger and love the reaction the hybrid cover and Rotary core give me.  That ball just flat out hits hard and carries well, but without the over/under you can get with solids/pearls sometimes.  Same goes for the Rising Star, which is absolutely in my opinion, a must have ball for medium-dry lanes.  Again, it's a hybrid but it helps prevent the overreaction you can get with a pearl ball on the dry.

My arsenal

Heavy Oil: Storm Virtual Gravity Nano: 2000 AB
Medium-Heavy Oil: Storm Anarchy: 1500 polished
Medium Oil: Roto Grip Nomad Dagger: 1500 polished

Medium-Light Oil: Roto Grip Rising Star: 1500 polished
Current Ball Arsenal
Heavy:
MOTIV Jackal Legacy
MOTIV Mythic Jackal

Med-Heavy:
MOTIV Trident Odyssey
MOTIV Forge Fire
MOTIV Covert Revolt

Medium:
MOTIV VIP ExJ Sigma
MOTIV Sigma Sting
MOTIV Pride Solid

Medium-Light
MOTIV Venom Shock
MOTIV Tribal Fire

The Victory Road Pearl I think would be a good ball to start with.  Have not thrown the VR Solid.  I love the VR Pearl.  You will be happy with the ball!
