Something I noticed...
« on: November 23, 2005, 03:43:55 AM »
Something I noticed when I watched Norm bowl on Sunday was that it took him almost half the game before switching balls. Now, he may have been convinced the Paradigm was the better ball(which is what it looked to be as what he was throwing). Then he pulled out a Diablo, and the ball seemed to roll up much better. To me, the Diablo actually covered more boards than the Paradigm, but hey...what do I know.

The real meat of this post is this: how much do bowling ball companies and their latest and greatest equipment affect which ball a player is going to throw?

For the example above, it would have been great for storm if Norm could have just owned Scroggins with the Paradigm. Probably would have sold more high end balls, however, that was not the ball that would have won the tourney for Norm. Personally, I would have thought that he would have made a ball change earlier, but maybe he did not because he wants to showcase the latest and greatest for storm.

Personally, I am more inclined to buy a Diablo moreso than a paradigm based on that I have a fired up already, and like it, but also that It seems to me more versatile than the Paradigm.

DJ,

I picked up on the same thing but I came to a bit of a different conclusion.

When I saw Norm throwing the Paradigm for the outside line - straighter is greater shot it seemed to me to be a strange ball choice.  To me, the Paradigm is a skid / snap ball that is kind of lost on that shot.  When he switched to the Diablo it got a little earlier roll which drove the 6 pin through the 10 pin.  The Paradigm got traction down the lane about 2 ft later than the Diablo which left some weak 10s.  Apparently Norm was having great success with the Paradigm during practice.  Maybe he just threw a bid faster during the match.  I dunno.

I don't think the ball companies have any real say in what the pros use.  They may suggest, but ultimately these guys are trying to win games first and show off the equipment a distant second.  In my book Norm is one of the 10 best bowlers ever and I am sure he didn't loose a major just to show off a Storm ball.

I'm not sure how these ideas never seem to be disabused in bowlers' minds; somehow, people seem to continue to want to believe that the $5,000.00 or so that the manufacturer would give to the bowler for using the new ball means more than a PBA title and the $100,000.00 first prize. Think over that last situation and tell me if anyone in their right mind would take such a risk.

Are you guys doing the wrong drugs or just not reading the right forums? (This has been discussed many, many times over the past 6-12 months here on ballreviews)

Maybe it's because you, with the "gift" of 20/20 hindsight, believe that Norm Duke (and others who have been in his position) could have seen into the future while under the intense pressure of bowling in a stadium, before a huge TV audience, competing for one of the richest AND MOST PRESTIGIOUS prizes in PBA history or under any circumstances.

OR maybe you believe that these amazing and incredibly talented bowlers, who do this for a living, are just like us league hackers who change balls at the drop of a hat? Maybe you don't believe that their incredible skill at changing every facet of their release and delivery to make these balls do the tricks that can only dream of doing. Maybe you believe that their only recourse is to change to another ball.

I'd bet every damned ball I own that after leaving that first weak 10 pin, his next 2 deliveries on that lane involved a separate release change that he believed would kick out the 10 pin, that only after the 3rd one didn't work did he try a different ball that struck the first time he threw it.

OK, I was a little brutal and a bit overly sarcastic, but how could any intelligent person ever believe such nonsense??

Pardigm or Diablo, what was Duke's real problem initially? At first, he kept over throwing the Paradigm. But that was after he kept laughing and joking for the entire time he was not bowling. Just looked like he finally settled down when he strung the strikes. Maybe the Diablo gave a better look because it hooks sooner, but he was throwing it way better at that point. He did strike with the Paradigm early in the match if everyone missed that.

Charlest,

I appologize for my ignorance, but I am not a pro bowler and I have always been curious on how much sponsors effect what a pro-bowler does in tournaments. Your statements may be true, but rather harsh, because most of us lay bowlers do not know how the PBA circuit works. I do not know how much money these guys get to throw certain equipment. Your assumption of what I know as a lay bowler is wrong. I don't know how the circuit works. The question I made was a valid question for someone who does not know the circuit. I am sure he did make adjustments and after the amount of frames it took, he learned that he needed to make a ball change after all. I mean for christ sakes, with all the damn denny's commercials they are probably all forced to eat at denny's on the tour all the time. I don't know. I have no idea. That is why I was asking.
