Looking at buying a storm ball, but which one?
« on: September 22, 2012, 09:50:55 PM »
i have always been skeptical about storm being that i throw a lot of hammer stuff and i like the way it hits...but i really like the look of the storm stuff they have out.  My question is in everyones opinion, what storm ball would be a good ball to basically see if i want to get some more storm stuff... should i go big hook monster ie lucid... or something versitle with a good read like the iq tour... my speed and revs are matched for the most part but sometimes speed dominates.  I have a a lower axis rotation.  i like to hook it though...thoughts anyone? thanks!!!!!!!

If you are looking at the whole ball line I'd look for a benchmark ball to get a sense of the lineup.  Balls to consider would be IQ Tour, Modern Marvel, Crossroad, HyRoad, or Manic.  Personally I'd recommend a Manic.  It's a good benchmark piece and it will be cheaper than any of the others I've mentioned.  I think if you are going from Hammer to Storm you will be surprised how strong a lower priced ball like the Manic.

What balls do you like?  Do you prefer symmetricals?....pearls?....weaker/stronger covers?....They have tons of good pieces, but if you don't match up well with the core/cover combo....it won't roll good.

I ask that because I tend to favor milder covers.  I love Storm and Roto but have a hard time matching up with their higher end pieces.  I love the Lucid, but for the most part have had success with the Road series, and that goes back years.

If I was going to try another company...I would probably start with a mid price ball and not a hook monster....give them a fair shake.

the road series does fit into a ton of none storm bowlers arsenal rather well. it is more comparable to the motion other companies give you rather than the very aggressive motion of storms premier lines. the other ball that does very well is the frantic. my frantic has a stronger motion and more versatile shape than my taboo original. I would look into the victory road pearl and the frantic is what i would look into.

Russell, I like stuff that is rolly and strong when i have to square up and maybe swing it a couple boards but i also like standing left and just feeding it right and letting it roll and hook back in

The Marvel Pearl will be a good fit for the rolly reaction that will be strong. The Lucid will be quite a bit stronger and it is about as early as the pearl in box finish.

I will second (third? fourth?) the Road series. It is very difficult to find anyone who has had issues with a HyRoad (perhaps the best benchmark ball ever made...with the only close competition being the Tour Power and the Gamebreaker).

The CrossRoad reacts a lot like one of my favorite balls balls from Storm's past, the Eraser PBT.

I too am a big Hammer guy but this mid-priced line from Storm is VERY tempting.

The other obvious choice is the Manic/Fringe/Frantic line....great coverstocks wrapped around a very underrated and versatile core.

I also would suggest the Road series.  As Doug states, the HyRoad is possibly one of the best benchmark balls ever made.  I use this in league to determine whether I should go stronger, weaker or stay the same.  You can't go wrong with the price point for one of the best all-around balls available IMO.

I would even suggest a Frantic if you like hybrids with proven cores.  Even though that ball is primarily for medium-light oil, it is much more versatile than advertised, and sells at a good price too.

there you have it. everyone is suggesting the road series (hyroad, victory road pearl, cross road) and the frantic. pick your poison....

anything in the mid price range... agree completely with all those who have said the Road series, have had nothing but success with my Crossroad, ball rolls very strong through the deck.

I'd also look at the Marvel series since you said you like a strong/rolly ball that's able to make it back when you move left, the Marvel Pearl or the Modern Marvel are the ones i'd suggest looking at

If you tend to be speed dominant and want to hook it...buy yourself a Nano.  Then ball down to a symmetric ball like a Crossroad or Frantic or Hyroad.

i would not get the nano. it is way more powerful that any ball hammer has ever produced. when comparing the my nano and the taboo pearl on kegels easy street. i throw the taboo pearl, which is stacked, over 17 out to 7. with my nano, which has a weaker layout than my taboo pearl. i throw over 23 out to 6. If you want total power, go ahead and get nano. but if you want something that will be easy to use on many patterns. the roads series and the frantic are better options..
