What is the best ball for hooking?
« on: November 02, 2003, 09:55:36 AM »
Without me going into all the technical jargin I throw a pretty good hook.  I've been using a sledgehammer for about two years now and that's all.  My avg. is 190 but the ball is dead as you would expect.  I want to know anyone's opinion on what the best ball for a strong hook would be?  So far I'm thinking Fear Factor or X-Factor Deuce.  Please let me know.  Thanks.

If you're going Storm only, it'll be the Fear Factor pretty easily.  Don't get me wrong, the Deuce (along with a sanded Reloaded, or a Core Power LRG) hooks a fair amount, but none of those are true heavy oil balls, they're more medium-heavy balls.

Well besides storm...what do you think the best ball there is for hooking (primarily on well oiled lanes).

Super Carbide Bomb, no contest.  It was put out as the biggest hooking ball on the market, and so far has been given the highest hook rating.  Depending on where you get it, it'll run you about 20-50 bucks more than the Fear Factor.

It's a Lane 1 Buzzsaw.  You can't find it on bowling.com, however you can find it on www.blockbusterbowling.com (I believe) and www.buddiesproshop.com, (again, I believe).  What I would suggest doing is contacting Doug Sterner by way of a personal message and purchasing one from him.  The guy is awesome.

99% of people do NOT need the biggest hook monster on the planet.  Something like the Duece should be a good medium/heavy oil ball for most styles.  Anything more will likely burn out and hit like a marshmallow.  Many new "hookmonsters" have been released since the Sledgehammer.  Also, don't just go by hook ratings.  Bowling This Month (maybe where Hamster got his info) has some odd numbers.  The Thing supposedly outhooks the Element (both Dynothane balls) by 2 units.  Odd considering that the Thing is part pearl while the Element is solid and has much higher flare (differential).

Well I liked the Deuce because I hear it hits hard.  If the carbide bomb comes in and hits like a marshmallow and especially leaving sevens (i'm a lefty) or even worse due to light hits the deuce should work.  I'd get fear factor cause I like the hook and as long as it hits hard it's good.

Buzzsaws have a reputation for supposedly hitting harder than balls from other companies.  It has been scientifically proven that the patented diamond cores used in Buzzsaws retain more energy down the lane, but they're not magical, and they don't do wonders for everyone.  However, just due to the dynamics of the ball, the Deuce won't hit very hard if it's skidding, it's not meant to be a true oil ball.  None of us know just how much oil you're dealing with.  Nothing will hook much on TRUE heavy oil.  Like Strider said, the Deuce would probably be your best bet, most people don't need a ball that's going to hook at their feet.  But if you're looking for a ball that will hook the most and give you the best look on heavy oil, the Super Carbide Bomb would be the best.  As for Doug Sterner, post something in the Lane 1 forum with his name in the topic, then post your question to him.  He'll get back to you soon.

I just picked up a New Reaction Roll on Ebay pretty cheap.

It appears to be a heavy oil monster.  I think there may be some more there.

The Black Cherry Bomb by Lane 1 will take care of all of your needs, including carry down, unless you are bowling in soup, as it covers a wide-wide range of conditions that balls like the Deuce won't cover. I would reccommend it over the Deuce.

i'd have to say the Track Mutant.  best ball i have ever bought from that company.  you get good length with it. and it has a killer backend.  better than that, the ball will carry practically anything.  that ball hits soo hard.  i just rolled a 289 with it last night on fairly heavy oil and every shot was light.  in my opinion the mutant is the way to go.  and it outhooks my deuce on heavy oil by a long shot.
