What layout would this be ? And what is its advantage / disadvantage ?

He's probably a full roller. I would not keep that layout if you are a 3/4-roller like most people today.

That's kind of a version of the "Girard" layout. I've got one on a ball even though I'm not a full roller. My first 1-2 oil rings hit the thumb hole but it doesn't thump, and it quickly moves off it.
Still testing that ball out, and I just made a big-time surface change so I can't give you a complete review. The ball I'm using it on is a Columbia 300 Reaction Roll, which came out of the box feeling like sandpaper. It was too aggressive for my house shot, so I've taken it up to 2000 plus polish and will be testing it soon.

That's where mine is. I'm at about 1.4 inches below the thumb. About 1 out of 4 times I won't hit the hole, 2 out of 4 times I'll hit it once and 1 out of 4 I'll hit it twice. Can't tell a performance difference, no matter what happens. But it still needs more testing.

A low track bowler that can throw this ball after winning it should, before plugging and re-drilling. The pin low like that should help smooth out the break point down the lane. The ball will not change direction as quickly. Probably be an arsenal ball, not something to throw everyday, but on the right condition could give an advantage.
I had a La Nina drilled similar to this ball. It was awesome on the right condition. Very lazy reaction, but still had hitting power. Used it on a Cheetah pattern on fresh resurfaced wood. High volume in the front, short distance pattern, scorch on the back ends and gutter. Lanes played like they were slick for me, crazy.
Flare "should" go away from the fingers and around the thumb, the reason why the pin is "usually" well below the thumb hole. My track is pretty low, no worries about hitting the thumb.
