Whats the opinion on the SHIFT???
« on: September 04, 2007, 03:55:48 AM »
Greetings STORMERS

I recently switched friom Roto-Grip to STORM since I fell in love with my Secret AGent

So I was thinking about getting the DOMINATION but after looking at the SHIFT I just might get that instead so whats the on-going opinion of this ball????????

TIA

Personally I didn't like the ball.  It almost seemed like a core / cover match-up issue for me;  Ball was either too early or not strong enough around the corner.  On a defined wet/dry condition it was good but on anything else it was hit or miss for me.

I LOVE my Shift.  Right now it is my 'go to' house shot ball that I can just as easily send it straight down 9 board as I can swing it.  It is among the most versitile balls I've ever used.

It really depends on what you are trying to do.  In my opinion the Shift will handle a higher volume of oil than the Domination but the Domination is stronger off the break point.  IMO the Shift's motion is exactly between the SA and the Domination.

My original SHIFT review plus some extra comments:

SHIFT - This is a ball of choice when the SPECIALS are burning up too much, and for all medium conditions with some room. Need to strike a lot? The Shift is your ball. Got me 715 with a 276 with the front nine strikes in singles at this year's USBC playing around 25. The box finish is shiny, but it's a Pearl Particle so it does NOT squirt in oil. I have even used it with success on a fresh house condition where my Special was hitting weak due to the very dry back-ends. Just rolled the Shift in the oil and ended up with a 780 series.  My main Shift is pin over bridge at 75 degrees. Like the pin high because it goes with what the ball is designed to do - get down the lane and make a strong move on lanes that have transitioned some or are moving strongly in the back-end. It really works great on an extremely broken down hooking condition so long as you still have some oil inside to give you some skid. This was the condition for singles at USBC and I was able to line up and just fire it without much hit and it recovered every shot for three games except one I totally missed. Also won a title in out city tournament on a total house wall that was very wet-dry - just got deep into the wet and rolled it as much as I could.
Also have used it in some PBA regionals when dry area develops. Had a lot of success with it in the Midwest PBA doubles on Chameleon after transition.
It is the type of ball where if you don't have reaction or you aren't striking put it away and try something else. But when it is working it is an amazing piece.
I drilled one with pin under middle finger and MB almost at my PAP and it rolled terrible. Seems to be a strong ball that you should drill strong and use it where that is needed.

They are totally different. In addition to cover differences, cores are different - SHIFT is long and strong, SECRET is more an arcer.

Big Jake...I agree with Riggs, the Shift is definitely condition specific.  Its not going to be a "first out of the bag' ball.  The one I have I would use later in a block when the lanes open up.

I would recommend the T-Road pearl.  It has the same coverstock the Special Agent has, but its going to be longer with a sharp backend reaction.  Everyone that has a T-Road says its an awesome ball, and I agree.  The Special and T-Road is a great 1-2 punch.

Just my $.02

I prefer more controlled balls to start with to get good reads. Something with a little surface and not a huge skid/flipper - Diablo is one I use now. Secret Agent, too.

People need to realize that mass bias balls arent for everybody. That is why we've scaled back on the amount of mass bias balls in the product line. You really need to match your rev-rate and ball speed together in order for a mass bias ball to work well for you. Even then it will still be condition sensitive and dependant on coverstock management. That is why you see more symmetrical core balls being used on tougher patterns

Guzz is so right. People need to realize that not every ball is made for every condition and that matching up is the key. The great thing about Storm, IMHO, is that when they come out with new balls they usually do something different than what their other recent releases do. SHIFT was very different from SPECIAL and SECRET and SURE FURE are very different as well, etc., etc., etc.

Don't buy this ball. It rolls great till it cracks all the way around the ball over night. I had this ball for about a month and now its a house ball. Run from this ball.
You really should contact Storm and see if they will replace it.  Storm is great about that -- they replaced my cracked Special Agent and Spit Fire no questions asked.  The replacements have 3 times as many games as those original balls did and they are in perfect condition.
