Storm Triple X-Extreme
« on: November 14, 2008, 02:19:23 AM »
I used to have A Triple X-Extreme in 15# a few years ago, when it first came out and I loved it, but had to drop to 14# because of some health issues, so I sold it. This ball had the Acutread cover which I found to be easily tuneable. Anyhow, a member on this site had one for sale with only 6 games on it and not a scratch or chip/dent in the cover, so I bought it as I wanted a ball to do some experiments with my grip since I had recently gave away all of my old balls and had nothing left to plug and drill on. Ball looks NIB.

The reason I am writing about this ball is that I am amazed at how the move, hit, pin carry is just as good today as it was when the ball first came out. Especially with many conditions being different today than they were when this ball came out. The ball is currently at 2000 Grit Abralon and is working really great on the Brunswick Pro Anvil Synthetic Lanes that I bowl on.

The Triple is only a 3 1/2 year old ball. House conditions have not changed that much since this ball was new. Where you may see a big difference, is on the tour, where the oils are very slick, and the Brunswick machine oils a bit differently than Kegel machines.
I noticed that you have an abralon finish on the ball. The use of Abralon pads today have really changed ball characteristics when rolling down a lane. You can sometimes make an older ball read better with the use of an abralon pad today, then when it was new, and abralon was not out yet, and we just used sand paper and scotchbrite.
I recently dug out of my basement my Hot Rod Pro Stock pearl, and opened up the lanes to shoot a 750 block at a local tournament a few weeks back. The ball didn't read the fronts the same way my new equipment does. But if I were to use that ball at a regional, it would just dart and dive on me (I tried this last year during a practice session). Hitting it with abralon helped, but the new balls still rolled better. I still throw a lot of older pieces in league play.
There are a lot of great older pieces, that I still carry with me to local tournaments. Some times, I have more margin for error with an older ball when the house tries to put out  more challenging conditions, and the more recent cover stocks over read a flatter pattern.

I've got a similar story with an original X-Factor. It's probably my favorite ball I've ever owned and I had somewhere between 1,000-1,500 games on the one I bought new off the shelf when I was still in college.

Over time, the ball lost its reaction completely. I tried cleaning it, everything I could think of and nothing would work. Then I started drilling my own stuff and got a ball spinner in the process.

About three months ago, I ran my X-Factor through the dishwasher, then took it out to the shop and went 1000 Abralon, 2000 Abralon, Storm Reacta Shine. Then I went bowling with it.

It's almost as strong as it was the day I got it. My old friend is back! I use it now later in a block these days because, although it's close to what it used to be, it's not quite there -- understandable given that it's, what, eight years old now? And has 1,500 games on it to boot.
