In between Ball
« on: July 06, 2013, 11:25:47 AM »
I'm looking to pick up the new Marvel-S and Hy-Road Pearl when they are released. I wanted to get some opinions on which other Storm balls, preferably a symmetrical pearl, would fit nicely in between those 2. I was looking at the Fire Road but wanted to get opinions in case there was a better option. These will be my first set of Storm balls since I had the T-Road Pearl and Surefire. Looking to cover medium to medium-heavy with a 3 ball set.

My specs:
PAP: 4.75" over x 1/2" up
Speed: 15-16 mph
Rev Rate: 380-400

Personally I like to utilize the Storm and Roto Grip lines to give me different looks. I believe they can be used very effectively to "fill in gaps". With that said, how bout a Deranged? Seems like it would be a good step down from the Marvel S and above the Hyroad Pearl depending on drilling.

the fire-road with a surface change to about 2000 would probably be your best bet. Most people overlook it because it's not in the upper tier of flippy pearls. It yields a consistrnt arc instead. I wish i had choose that ball over the regular hy-road because the cover for the fire road has better traction in oil than r2s pearl (hy-road pearl) and is less flippy. So f you did get the fire road to go along with the new upcoming releases, you'll find that the fire road and hy-road pearl compliment each other nicely.

By the way i thought the marvel-s was designed to be a heavy oil symmetric. I think the reign of power would do you better because it is designed fo medium-heavy.

I figured with the Marvel-S I could take it to 4000 or hit it with some polish to make it handle medium-heavy better. Then if I hit a true heavy pattern just a simple scuff with some abralon would get it back to a heavy oil ball.

My thinking is to go with a Marvel Pearl.  You'd be getting a ball that has the same core as the Marvel-S, but with the R2X pearl cover that has proven itself time and time again.  It's very clean through the front and is angular in back.  Carry is very good with this ball, and there are several in my league that have had a lot of success with it.  The Marvel Pearl handles medium-heavy volumes very well.

The good thing with this option is that it would allow you to keep the Marvel-S at box for your heavy oil, and you'll still have a well-defined step down.  The Marvel Pearl will be several boards weaker than the Marvel-S.  However, it is still several boards stronger than the Hy-Road.  The Hy-Road would be your benchmark ball.

I'd go Marvel-S > Marvel Pearl > Hy-Road.  That's a great 3 ball combo that can handle virtually all medium to heavy conditions.

Yes- I would go with the Hy-Road hybrid as the benchmark.

Technically the Hy-Road and Hy-Road pearl can compliment each other well, depending on the how they're drilled.  I'm thinking the hybrid would be more of a benchmark based on the stats provided and the fact that it does work well on most conditions for most styles.

From either Hy-Road, I would then step down to the Frantic or potentially the Shatter/Wrecker balls from Roto Grip, depending on the type of look that the poster is looking for.   IMHO, the Wrecker and the Frantic are tough to beat for medium-light patterns and for the price point.  Both give a great combo of length, midlane read, and backend ability with the Wrecker being slightly cleaner and slightly longer.  The Shatter would be a good ball if the poster wants to have a pure pearl cover that goes long and strong.
