T-Road Pearl carry problem
« on: October 04, 2007, 07:12:51 AM »
I am new to Storm equipment & have a T-Road Pearl ball, drilled 4 X 5, Pin above & to the right of the ring finger no weight hole OOB finish. I love the way the ball moves on the lane & do not have any problems hitting the pocket, however I am having a difficult time with getting the correct angle to the pocket to kick out the 10 pin. Tried moving left & right with feet & target (hit high flush, flush & light in the pocket), but leave the 10 pin 90% of the time. Any thoughts? Maybe a weight hole to change backend reaction?

Thanks,

If you're leaving 10 pins no matter if you hit "high flush," "flush," or "light," man.  That is impressive.  I've never had that much trouble taking a 10 pin out in my life.

What does the 6 pin do usually?  Does it go up and around the neck of the 10 pin, or does it fall flat into the gutter?  What part of the lane are you playing?

Without knowing anything more yet, I am assuming your ball is pushing a little too long and coming in behind the headpin, so to speak.  My first suggestion would be change your hand position to come up the back of the ball a little more--you might be getting too much side rotation and not enough forward roll, resulting in extra length and a more angular breakpoint.  A little more forward roll combined with possibly a board or two move right with your feet may give you a better angle to the pocket.  Or possibly just a little more surface on the ball for earlier roll.  But again, it's hard to tell without knowing exactly what you're doing.  Can you give us some more details?

Dan,
I was playing 10-13 at the arrows out to about 6-8 at the break point (I tried different combinations of target & break point). Lanes are older AMF synthetics 38' THS with OOB outside of 5. My normal game is about 15.6 mph at the pins & according to the CATS system at Reno I am throwing about 375 rpm with axis about 30 to 45 deg. The 6 pin reaction was flying around the neck on high flush & most of the flush hits & as a lot of us get a weak hit on the light hits with the 6 pin in front of the 10. When I switched to my Big Shot, playing about the same area I was carrying most of my strikes.

My suggestion would be to stick with your Big Shot.  If you're T-Road pearl is not carrying, maybe a ball change was just what the doctor ordered!

My son was having a problem with carry. We took it into the shop and they sanded it, then put a polish back on it. He is now averaging 225 in his highschool league.

For some reason polishing it back up brought out the hook in the ball. Makes no sense to me, but that is what happened.

I had a similar thing with both the solid and pearl. Refreshing the surface from the factory finish down to 1000 abralon then re-applying polish helped to get a slightly earlier reaction which stopped the ring 10s for me.

The shape of both balls looks great before, but now both have seem to carry really well too.

I had a little trouble with the Pearl being too strong coming out of the breakpoint.  I hit it with 4000 Abralon and the ball was unbelievable.

Possible carry-down of oil is effecting the reaction.

Change of surface is pretty much called for to have the ball "bite" the lane through the oil and finish in the pocket as others have suggested.

I will usually change to a particle pearl to combat this and it seems to work well
