505A drill pattern
« on: October 14, 2012, 12:16:11 AM »
Ok, so I am getting a barely used 505A in exchange for my old Hyroad...     Well the guy who has it is also drilling it for me... bonus!!

So his thought on the ball was to do a pin down drilling ( pin right under the fingers ) and the CG over @ 45 degree's...    i know a lot of guys want my drill specs, but i know having the pin right between my fingers puts the pin 5inches from my PAP..

My thought is to use the same drilling but put the pin above the fingers about 1 to 1 1/2 inches...

I'd like to be able to use this ball to play the track area at my league house which has wood lanes and the shot well.. is nice but can be brutal...

I drilled mine with Tracks suggested layout for those that didnt know their PAP. Pin over bridge with MB 3 inches from thr grip centre line. This drill was fantastic for me playing the track area.Carried everything!

Moving the pin up that much can make a flippy ball almost uncontrollable, depending on the bowler's release and the oil pattern. I'd suggest that if your release makes balls react more evenly than average, then that drilling should be fine. If, however, your release makes balls tend ot flip hard than the average release, I'd stick with the pin under drilling.

While you can always smooth out the ball's reaction by sanding the ball smother (4000 grit or lower), that also depends on your ball speed. With firmer ball speed, that is good, with lower than average ball speed, that could make the ball hook too early. AND wood lanes tend to have more friction than synthetics and to lose midlane oil sooner, depending on the amount of oil applied.

Good luck.

+1 with Charlest on the layout of the 1.5" above the bridge. It makes the ball really flippy and over/under. A suggestion I have, just pin slightly above the bridge and the MB close to the thumb. Will give you the length you want on wood and the recovery you need in the track.

Hey guys, so on the first 505A that i got a few weeks, ago the guy i got the ball from only plugged the thumb and finger holes... and didnt do the weight hole..

So I kept the drilling the same as what was on the ball, which had the pin right under the fingers and the CG/MB over at about 45degree's... and it works really nice, it still gets down the lane nice while having some pop on the backend..

The second 505A that i got from a teammate, I did with a pin up drilling, where the pin is up 1.5inches over the fingers and the CG/MB is off at about the same angle ... But I originally scuffed up the ball with 500 then 1000grit just to give it a different reaction.  With this reaction I was able to take alot of hand out of the ball and just let the ball read the lane..

After league I did a full resurface 220/500/1000/1500/2000  to still give it a smooth reaction on the backend ( hopefully )...
