A question for all here?
« on: February 12, 2006, 04:57:49 AM »
I have been wondering.... for the bowlers on here which of the following do you primarily base your purchasing decision on:
a. the PBA show?
b. a ball a friend or proshop operator recommends to you?
c. the ball you see people in your leagues scoring with?
d. other? please explain?

I try to watch people throw a ball also it depends on what ball company u prefer. Also what ballreaction u want as well what matches up to u.

I try to base my ball decisions on a combination of c&d. I try to look at bowlers in my house or area that have a  similar style to mine are throwing and scoring with, then i look at the drilling layouts and base a decision on these criteria.  Ken

I only throw Track because they seem to work the best for my game and because Track has a lot of releases each year, I always have some options. My ball driller is the best in my area, his advice is invaluable to me. Clint, Ex, REV and others on this site and Track's website and their posts are also very helpful to me.

OG1,

My answers to your questions:
A. Not necessarily
B. I ask for advice from my pro shop guy that drills my equipment, and I also ask the guy who represents Track, he is on the amateur staff and has a vast knowledge and is very smart about the specs of each Track ball...
C. Sometimes I get one of Track's newest releases before my buddy who is on staff does (LOL!) I know for a fact I had my Rule Delta 1 and Heat Blast before he did, he has asked me on a few occaisions how I felt about the ball before he punched those up as well...
D. I'm a loyal Track follower, the results are tremendous, and I feel they are a great company!

God Bless you and have a great week!

I know that a lot of people match up to a certain company's equipment.  However, I have always felt that it was a bad idea to be married to a certain brand.  All companies have something good to offer, and they are easy to miss if you have tunnel vision.  With that being said, I buy balls based off my proshop's recommendation for my game, or by my own research.  Sometimes I want to try a new coverstock or core.  I have never bought a ball because of B or C because everyone throws different.  What reacts great for one person might not for me.  It can also go the other way.

I don't (typically) bowl on a wide variety of conditions, so I haven't needed balls in lots of different spots.  Mostly medium to medium-heavy and replace as needed (or allowed).  The last time, I wanted a solid resin since all of my previous stuff was particle.

So I call the pro shop, say "Hey, whatcha got for 80% off?" and choose the solid resin.

Really, since I'm mostly replacing older stuff, I read posts here from others looking for similar types of equipment, maybe post something myself.  The drillers around here are limited in number and inventory, so I need a good idea ahead of time.  And with such fantastic knowledge from so many people on this site, I don't need as much input locally.  Not to say I cut anyone out, say "I want this drilled X by Y", and be aloof, but I don't have the local resources a lot of people here seem to.  If Clint or Rick or Steve were local, I'd probably rely on them as much, if not more, than a website.

My purchaes now are much different than before.  I know a lot more about my game and balls.  I know what covers I like and the specs I want with respect to the core.

I will answer this question based on what I am told when I sell a ball....and also my own views as well.

1- The PBA telecasts are great for early exposure of a ball. Most of those guys are using stuff that has not yet reached distributors and it gets the buzz going on a ball.

2- Most of my customers trust in what I tell them. They know I am going to be honest, fair and they are sure that the ball I put in their hands is going to work.

3- This happens occasionally. A ball will take off in this area sometimes if a guy is scoring like crazy with it. Usually it is not the best bowlers scoring that makes people want the ball, it is when an average "joe" is shooting good with it.

I go by the research i do online I do watch the show but it doesnt influence me on what I buy I just like to see if they are using something that isnt out yet.  As far as watching others most others in my town make any ball unimpressive plus it is like nothing but brunswick nation up here and all their stuff rolls way to early for me.  So dont pay much attention to what others throw.  I usually end up throwing what everybody else isnt.

Hey OG1,

I'd have to say (b) is my answer.  Most guys come back in the shop asking me what I just drilled "that" guy who is now shooting numbers or something like that.  Now "that" guy just got a new ball chosen by "me" to which I would feel fits his game the best.

PBA has little to no effect on my sales, could be because I've educated my customers to a point that they understand equipment much better than just watching "Joe Bowler" on TV use it.  Could also be the fact of watching a new ball go 190's on TV isn't helping either....

For myself my answer would be a combination of b. and d. The b. portion would be through the many pro shop operators I've been given a chance to talk to online through this site who I've been able to carry good conversations with about my game and what would work best for my game. The d. portion would be my own research into what I think may be a need for my game through reading the bowling reviews in magazines and also looking at reviews on various websites. Another portion to the d. equation would be my bowling coach, who has helped me by looking at my arsenal and discussing where there were gaps that I had to achieve some special looks on the lanes when I need them.

I definitely enjoy seeing the new equipment thrown on tour but I'm well aware of the fact that every operator throws the ball differently. And within my home house we have a variety of people that throw a variety of companies, but I don't see too many people that throw the ball exactly in the way I do so I don't take that matter into account.
