A question for Clint, Carl, or Rick
« on: August 25, 2006, 12:18:36 PM »
I just received my Meanie today.  I asked earlier but lost the post.  I need a few suggestions for a layout.  My PAP is 5 3/8 over & 1/4 up.  The ball I received has a 4-4.5 inch pin and top weight is 3 3/4 ozs.  I have a lot of speed and not much in the rev rate category.  I would like to get the most out of this ball I possibly could.  For a med-med-heavy shot.

Thanks,

Joe

Joe,

I would lay it out really strong. If you are "rev-challenged".....I would place the pin in the leverage position 3 3/8 from PAP 1 3/4 inches above your midline....and place the MB at 4 inches from PAP (on or close to your VAL).

This layout will work, you may need a coverstock adjustment, but we will touch on that if the time comes.

Goodluck,
Carl

Carl

No offense but if he drills it 3 3/8 X 4 which would be roughly a 25° drill the CG may be out past his VAL given the pin distance and with 3.75oz of top weight the balance hole is going to have to be HUGE to make it legal.

I know CG matters little but even if he places the balance hole at 6.75" from GC and uses a 1 3/16 hole it is going to need to be around 3.75" deep just to make it legal and once you get that deep you are removing very little side weight.

I also know that he could use a 1 1/4" bit to reduce the depth a little bit but if it happens to chip the ball has just become illegal based on the maximum 1 1/4" balance hole rule. For that reason I prefer not to have a balance hole larger than 1 1/8". I just know if I ever drill one at 1 1/4" I will shoot my first honor score and for some crazy reason they will decide to check the ball and say it is illegal based on the 1 1/4" balance hole that chipped on my final shot.
Yes my luck is that bad.

I do agree that drill would be a good one for him but not with those specs.

That is true, but we don't know where the CG is located in reference to the pin and MB.

earmite......if you were to draw a line from the pin straight to the MB where is the CG located?

Didn't think about that, sorry for jumping to an uninformed conclusion, just didn't want him to drill a boat anchor.

Hey ear,

I also like Carl's layout, you may need to place a weight hole in the thumb positive quadrant to remove some excess thumb weight from pushing the longer pin down.  I have tried my Mean at 800 and it looks very nice in the heavier stuff,  I may even try 500-600 just to see how much more it can handle.

If you are curious as to approximately what the layout will look like here it is.

The span is based on mine but the PAP is your's and the CG distance is based as inline and 4.25" from pin.

Carl,
The CG is 21/2 inches above the MB and to the left 1 inch.
Hope this helps.  Thanks to all suggestions.  It will be maybe a week or two before I can get it punched up.

Thanks,

Joe

The CG being left of the line from pin to MB definitely helps assuming your are right handed.

Joe,

That definately helps.......have your ball driller draw the lines on the ball and see if there would be too much sideweight to remove......IF that ends up being the case then you could simply raise the pin to 2-2 1/2 above midline. I think that 1 3/4 would aid you better....but you have to do what the ball will allow.
