Maintaining box finish on a Delta 1
« on: December 13, 2005, 01:54:27 PM »
Alright guys, I've put a few games on my Delta and I'm starting to notice that it isn't as dull as it was when I first got it.  I've been cleaning it every set with Clean N Dull, but it still isn't staying dull like it was.  I don't have a spinner but I do have a few scotchbrite pads in different colors (maroon, green, grey).  Should I hit it with the scotchbrite to bring it back down or what?  Thanks in advance.

I did. I hit mine with the green scotchbrite pad, wet, cleaned it up with a little alcohol for quick drying and VOILA! Like new. I think you'll be pleased overall...

Now, the green pad that I used may take it a bit UNDER the OOB condition. You may want to go with the gray one depending on your preferred grit. I believe the gray equals about 800-1000 grit, which is close to the original OOB condition... I wanted mine a bit more dull... the green is about 600 grit, I believe. Good luck!!

Clean and dull is supposed to leave it in box condition.  You may want to try the new power wash spray cleaner; it may work better.  Grey scotch brite is 800 grit and will get it close.  The only thing that you shouldn't do is dull a ball with scotch brite all the time.

While Clean N Dull will clean it, are you wiping it off while you use it with a towel....if you bowl for 3 hours (league) that oil is soaking into the ball the whole time....

A used grey scotchbrite has worked the best for me to get the Delta get as close to OOB when I have gone a few weeks using it.

Dan,

The method I use to clean any bowling ball works....and it keeps the surface where it was. Depending on the finish of the ball decides which scotchbrite I want to use.

FOR THE DELTA1:

DO THIS BY HAND....NOT ON A BALL SPINNER. Place Clean n Dull or Clean n Tacky (both work great and give the same results) directly onto a grey scotchbrite pad and wipe half of the ball APPLY VERY LITTLE PRESSURE. Allow it to sit on the ball for about 20 seconds or so then wipe it off with a dry towel. Do the same to the other half of the ball.

This method works great in pulling oil/dirt off of the ball's surface and out of the pours. If I were cleaning a ball that had an even more dull surface than the Delta I would use the green scotchbrite and if the ball were even more dull (closer to 400grit) I would use a burgandy scotchbrite. For polished equipment use a white scotchbrite. The white does not take the shine off of the ball. REMEMBER.....APPLY VERY LITTLE PRESSURE UNLESS YOU WANT TO MAKE THE BALL MORE DULL THAN IT WAS BEFORE YOU STARTED USING IT!!!!!!

Thanks for the help guys.  EX, one thing though.  I thought when using C&D that you wipe the ball off with a damp towel, then the dry cloth.  I'll use the grey pad today and see what it does.

Dan,

I use a dry towel. I have been using this method for quite some time. I don't think using a damp towel then a dry towel would hurt....I just don't do it.
