Advice Please
« on: February 13, 2006, 01:46:08 AM »
Hello fellow Tracksters,
Im looking for a good 14# ball that will
move on heavy oil for my dad.
He has very low revs, slow ball speed
and plays down and in. Yesterday we bowled
in a tournament and found the shot to be
a flood. Now he only has 1 ball and thats
a Phenom that has around 160 games on it.
His ball never moved 1 board and had to shoot
right up the middle only to keep leaving
5 pins. Im looking for a ball that will move
on heavy oil with his low rev rate. Not looking
for something thats going to hook a ton, but
something that will help him get the ball to
the pocket. Thanks for your help.

I would say either a Robo Rule or, if you can still find one, a Rule GP2.  Both will handle tons of oil.  They don't cover a ton of boards, but they can just chew through the oil.

Hey Ragin,

Another option would be the Rule Delta 1. Sometimes the Robo and GP2 can burn up and wash out sometimes. That is why I rely on the Delta to do the dirty work when the particles in my arsenal aren't working properly. God Bless you and I hope this helps buddy!

Also, has his Phenom been cleaned?  You may want to try one of the methods to "deep clean" it.

Kitty Litter
Soaking in warm water
Rejuvinator
etc etc etc

The Phenom was rejuvenated at the end of
last season and the darn thing just scoots
on wet conditions. On your everyday THS
that ball works great for him, but when
theres some oil out there he really struggles.

Having read your last post, I don't think this is the case, but are you certain it's heavy oil?  The Phenom is a higher-load particle ball, dull out of the box, and very strong.  While it may not be up there with the GP2 regarding movement in the soup, it seems weird that it's not doing anything.  Are you certain it's not burning up?

What surface does he have on the phenom?  This is a good ball for heavy oil.  However if he wants a new one Track has the Robo Rule as there heavy oil ball now.  The gp2 has been discontinued.  He may still be able to find one around.

Another thing to think about is if the lanes are flooded big time and his ball wont trun then chances are nothing will on that condition.  I have come across conditions where nothing will hook on them because the oil was so long and heavy.  That's when you just point the ball to the pocket and hope for the best.

Ragin',

The best choices for your father are either the Rule GP2 or the Robo Rule. These balls work great in oil<<<<<<<<<<<<naturally layout depending.

Do you happen to know the layout that your dad has on the Phenom?

Leaving 5 pins can also be that the ball is not finishing hard enough, are you sure there was sufficient oil on the lanes for that ball?

Let us know which ball you decide to get and we will gladly help you out with a layout suggestion.

I am certain its not burning up. I even had a hard
time getting my ball to move and my rev rate is
quite a bit more then his. I was playing 13 boards
to the right with my feet then i do in league. I
usually play, stand on 25 throw over 15 out to 5
and back she comes. Well not yesterday. So i know
his ball wasnt burning up. As far as the surface
well i bought it used and it had a little shine
to it, but worked great for him on league nights.
The ball fits his game on THS perfect but when
theres some oil out there she just does nothing.

Ragin',

So you want to add another ball because the Phenom is perfect for league?

I think you are best in getting him a Gp2 or Robo.

Yeh i was thinking the Robo myself. What are
your opinions on the Arsenal Aggressive fitting
the bill. Yes, No?

The Arsenal Aggressive is a very good ball, but it not a ball for extreme heavy oil. It will not roll early enough, and since your dad has lower revs.......you will need something to do the work for him.

Hey Ragin,

I'd also suggest a GP2 or Robo.  From how you describe it, it sounds like there wasn't enough dry boards (free hook) for the ball to react from.  Also, when we play down the middle, that is where most of or the heavier concentration of oil will exist (unless it's a sport shot) which will cause for a ball to slide and not be able to react even more so.  Hope this helps explain some...

Hey Ragin,

Since the Robo's intermediate differential is fairly low, we can still place it out towards val but I'd keep the pin at about the leverage position (3 3/8 to no more then 4 inches away from pap) for him to help the ball start flaring a little sooner in the heavier oil.  I'd also place it about finger level to below, somewhere from 1.5 to about 2 above mid line depending on the length of his span.

A 3.5x3mb with the pin about 2 inches up should work well for him.  Hope this helps...
