I would appreciate some advice from all of you Track lovers on selecting a ball and also on a recommended drilling. All of the recent hype in here about the Rule has really peaked my interest. I am not unhappy with my current equipment, just wanting to try Track and looking for something that might have a little more carry for me. I do tend to leave a number of 10 pins and my ball is often just a tad late coming in to the pocket it seems. I am leaning towards either the Untamed or the Rule at this point but am open to other suggestions.

I am a stroker-type player, prefer to go straight up the boards (first arrow), will move inside when required. Medium speed, rev-challenged, very low track. 14 # equipment, span is 3.75 inches, (small hands), thumb pitch is 1/8 forward, 1/8 right under palm. PAP is 5 inches right, .5 inches up.

My current go-to balls are a Vendetta Black (hand-sanded with Ebonite Sandblaster) and equally a Hammer 3-D Violet offset (box with a little polish). I use a higher polished V2 sanded when I have to play a little more inside line. My style, release and revs limit my ability to swing the ball more than 7-8 boards so I am pretty much a straight up player. My low-track tends to add a fair amount of skid, so a ball or drilling with early roll would seem to be suggested.

My current drillings have the pin just below or just right of the ring finger, CG kicked out to the right on midline with weight hole on VAL in line with pin and CG.

The house here has wood lanes, a typical 38 foot pattern which I believe are buffed to 42. House shot typically has good back ends and would be what I would call medium to medium-heavy. Lanes transition quickly and carry-down can be a problem by the 3rd game.

Rod, I think the ball you would be looking to get is an Untamed.

I have both the Rule and the Untamed and let me tell you, the Rule is ALOT of ball. The Untamed is very aggressive too, just in a different way. You said you like to play up the boards and the shot is medium/heavy with occasional carrydown. My suggestion would be to get an Untamed and drill it with the pin low, below ring finger and kick the mass bias out on your VAL. This will get the ball into an early roll and have a nice arc on the backend.

The hit on this ball is awesome, almost as good as the original Animal, but not quite. This ball keeps the pins low and should help you carry those pesky corners.

Keep in mind, this is just my suggestion. Others will chime in and give you their opinions as well. Good Luck either way.

Rod,

You list that your PAP is 5 inches horizontal....then you say that you track low. A five inch horizontal PAP would indicate that your track is not very low.
Can you clear this up for me please?

What Rock suggested is a good layout, but I would suggest that layout for the Rule. If you go with the Rule, try it with the box finish and if you want more or less length just adjust the coverstock accordingly. With this layout on the Rule you will get some length (naturally depending on the surface you choose), but it will give you a bit more recovery in the backends which can end up helping to get rid of some of those nasty 10 pins.

It does happen that way, but it is not normally seen that way.

Hey Rodan,

I'd also suggest the Rule because it is stronger than the Untamed. Both being good balls and choices to have, I'd prefer to have the strength vs not having enough. If your carrydown is pretty heavy by game 3, the stronger ball will hopefully be able to eat thru it better. If you got a chance to look at my vids, you'll that the Rule can recover from boards that the Untamed could not.

Based on these two comments, these are more reasons I chose the stronger ball. Keep in mind that it is your over skidding that creates the late entry so a ball that can pick up sooner in the midlane will hopefully give you the correct amount of backend needed to carry those stubborn 10's. Hope this helps...

First of all, thanks to everyone for your very responsive suggestions. I really do appreciate it! I have learned a lot in these forums and you guys should be commended for your willingness to help us relative novices out.

EX, I may be slightly off on my PAP measurement so perhaps telling you where the track rings are on the ball would be illuminating? I just got back from first night of league so I have some fresh tracking on my equipment. The ring closest to the thumb is 2.75 inches from the center of the thumb hole (7/8 diameter thumb sleeve) and I had 2.75 inches of track flare tonight on my 3-D offset. If I measure the diameter of the space on the bottom of the ball that has no track rings on it I get 6 inches across. Perhaps that is not as low a track as I may have led you to believe but I've been told by my ball driller that I have a low track.

In any event, I would agree with the majority here that a stronger ball (the Rule) may match up better for my particular style. What you all have to suggest makes logical sense and a ball that gets into an earlier roll would hopefully compliment/counteract my natural tendency towards skid. There was a little carrydown from the outset in league tonight as a few games of open bowling were played just prior on the lanes I was on. I did not enjoy success until the third game (a 224) when I slowed my speed down a little and gave the Vendetta Black more time to react. (going straight up 4) The slightly polished 3-D Offset had too much of a skid reaction for me so I relied more on the dull Black. I had eight ringing 10 pins on pocket hits tonight in 3 games. Obviously I would like to reduce that rate!

Thanks to you all for helping me make my decision regarding the Rule and on the drilling. EX, I may take you up on your offer and message you with future questions if you don't mind. Now if I can just find a way to order a Rule without my wife finding out I'm getting yet another ball! Have Mercy.

The Animal Untamed and the Rule are excellent choices for your style of play. However, because you do seem to have difficulty with heavier oil patterns and carrydown, I think the Rule would be better suited to your game. You already have balls for light to med conditions, so getting the Rule would be a great match. The Untamed being slightly weaker MIGHT overlap the Vendetta Black if it is drilled weak. Therefore, I would go with the Rule with a relatively strong drilling. You'll be happy when you encounter med-heavy to heavy oil and you will not have second thoughts saying: "I SHOULD have gotten the stronger ball!"

LOL! I'm experiencing the same dilemma. Having just bought the Animal, my dad won't let me spend another $400 CAD on yet another bowling ball! From seeing the videos, the Rule gives such an awesome backend reaction!
