Title: Advise for a new ball
Post by: Mikemack42 on September 24, 2011, 05:53:58 AM
Hey guys, I am starting my second season back bowling and have bought some storm and track balls that i am very happy with, but i am looking to round out my arsenal. I dont know stats or layouts very well, but need advice since my proshop guy is a lane one freak and i cant get sound advise from him about manufactures that he doesnt keep up with.

Currently i have

Storm Anarchy and a Prodigy

Track i have a 505A and a Thrash.

Generally the Anarchy is first out of the bag and i can use it throughout league most nights,

BUT when the lanes break down a little more i switch to my 505A which gets more length and doesnt burn out.

My big hole that i feel is when the 505A is to aggressive for the lanes.

I have been looking and debating about a 503C and a Frantic (storm is releasing later next month)

I loved my older track stuff (animal and Phenom Unleashed) and thats what led to the 505A...Its just way stronger then what i expected it to be...That is what scares me about the 503C.

Help with advice between the two or even another recommendation would be great along with a drilling...

Thanks again, and i can post pictures of current layouts on my balls if that will help, just shoot a message back to me...

Thanks

Mike

First off, both the Frantic and 503C will not be steps down from a 505A.  If you want a step down, you should look into a Cyclone.  You may also want to look into the Freeze.  If you want a step down, it is hard to find that looking into the mid/higher end price points.

I agree with Mikemack below.  The 503C and the 505A are very similar, with the only difference being a different pearl cover and a slightly modified core.  Plus, it reads the lane earlier than the 505A, so you're essentially duplicating what you already have.  The Frantic with the hybrid cover and core are also very close and again, you'd be duplicating things.

If you're looking for the step down, I would go either with a either a Track 300T or 300C.  Both of these balls are similar with the T being a solid, C being a pearl.  Both have proven symmetrical cores in them and would compliment the 505A well.  In the houses I bowled at this past summer, the 300T/C performed especially well and were more predictable than some of the other balls in that category.

In Storm's lineup, I would go down to the Tropical Heat line, sticking with the pearls.  The hybrid is actually strong and starts to get close to the 505A.  The solid might be a little closer than you would like.  An alternative within the Storm family is the Roto Grip Rising Star and possibly the new Shooting Star.  The Rising Star gives a ton of performance for the money and takes surface changes really well.  The core used really helps keep pins low and it is one of the hardest hitting balls that I have seen in the low-mid performance category.  It's been great to use when the lanes are totally fried.  As for the Shooting Star, I haven't seen enough of it.  However with it being a solid cover vs hybrid, you would get an earlier read on the lanes.

My arsenal

Heavy Oil: Storm Virtual Gravity Nano: 2000 AB
Medium-Heavy Oil: Storm Anarchy: 1500 polished
Medium Oil: Roto Grip Nomad Dagger: 1500 polished

Medium-Light Oil: Roto Grip Rising Star: 1500 polished

Don't rule out the 300T.  I have drilled several 300cs and have seen them on the lanes. They are ok, but I think there are better options. I would even consider adjusting the cover and layout on the 503 before going with the 300c, based on what I have seen.

Those that can do. Those that can't complain. Pimpin ain't easy, but it's mandatory.

I would go the Storm Tropical Breeze. I have a 505A and it fits nicely under it. IMHO there wont be much difference between 505A, Tropical and Tropical Heat. Breeze is a definite step down.

I must respectfully disagree with the comment on the 300C not being a good option as it has been a consistent performer for me over the past year.  I can play anything from light oil to broken down medium oil and score consistently with this ball.

Okay so suggestions of breeze and cyclone are not something i want to look at. Sorry i just feel like a layout and cover adjustment could aid in filling the hole that i have. I feel strongly that the 300 series ball either C or T is looking to be my best option, possibly a 503C...What would a layout look like and pin and top weight looks to ensure a good drill?

Thanks

Mike

i would suggest a 300T pin up and without knowing any of your stats go like 4.5" pin-PAP and you can always add polish if necessary
