Alternatives: Morpheus weak or mid-line strong?
« on: September 24, 2004, 01:52:51 AM »

Hi Track-o-philes.... looking for some advice on ball alternatives. I've hada few Track products (Freak, Phenom U) and really liked them, especially on oil shots. However, my question is related to conditions with less oil, when the lanes break down, as I this gear (drilled relatively strrong) has to be put away.

1. Are there any Morpheus-based balls that will go long that can  be used on a medium shot? (Given that most are particle, I had been assuming that the answer is no, but a reality check is good!)

2. How should I lay out such a ball? I generally use a 4x4 layout... should I use label with pin next to ring and MB left of thumb? Or something else? (I will ad that pin above bridge and CG in palm layouts do not work for me at all).

Thanks!!

Hey PJR,

I think a nice fit under those two is a FreakaZoid.  It is a very nice stable reacting ball with a strong but controllable backend.  I have mine drilled at 4x3 pin 1.5 from midline and this is the reaction it gives me on the breakdown after my Rule becomes too strong.  With the lower rg design, it helps pull against a lite oil line or spotty mids vs squirting off of it and then just continues movement on the backend.  Excaliber and I also saw this ball keeping the pins very nice and low for better mixing action.  Hope this helps...

Hey Rick,....I'm not sure the pjr is looking for something to go "underneath" the ones he's had....but rather...can the morpheous cored balls be drilled to be on mediums maybe medium lights.........and from what I understand...and according to what King of the mill told me......you could have 3 Animals with different drills and covers and be able to handle 90-95% of what you see!

I read the same post Jeff. If one were to do that, you would be looking at Animal#1 for Heavy with a drilling like pin below ring, mb on val, surface prepped to 600-800. Animal#2 for mediums with the pin above ring or over bridge and the mb just right of thumb with surface box or slightly polished. Then Animal#3 could be used for lighter volumes with a negative drill. Mb would be left of thumb and the pin would be somewhere left of the middle finger with a high polish on the ball. That ought to work, if it doesnt sound right, please chime in, I am still learning the basics of drilling!!

pjr,

1-Yes there are some morpheous balls that will go long and can be used on mediums shots. All of them respond so well to layouts that it is very possible.

2-You are correct in the MB placement left of thumb,  this will help reduce flare. If you are reluctant to try pin above finger drillings you can go below, but as a safe placement under I would suggest under the middle finger. This will promote length. You will more than likely have to adjust the surface as well. Don't be afraid to put some polish on these balls.

Morpheous balls are very versatile. As Mr Revs mentioned you can easily take an Animal (the biggest hooking ball in oil I have ever seen or used) and with 3 different layouts be able to use it on a vast majority of what most bowler see. If you are looking for a ball to try this kind of layout on, Rick is correct in suggesting the Freakazoid. Another good ball to try this on would be the Animal Untamed. This ball responds very well to surface adjustments and with a nice coat of Delayed Reaction it would get down the lane very nice.

If you have any other questions, or I missed on something in your post, just let me know.

Goodluck

Ahh, I see.  Thanks guys...I saw mid-line strong.

First ball that comes to mind is a FreakOut polished but they're pretty hard to get now.  If that's the case, I kind of like the suggestion on the Animal (high glossed) like you guys said with the mb weak.  Haven't polished my Untamed yet, can't say.

Hey Rock77, I can see you now, 4 ball bag.  Animal...Animal...Animal...spare ball.....lol

As much as a multi-Animal bag sounds interesting, is it really possible? I mean, lets say having one polished with pin next to ring and MB left of thumb really going to tame down so much that I could use it on a broken down light oil condition? Is there something special about the Morpheus that tames down more than other balls?

pjr,

It is definately possible. I think the pin next to the ring finger is probably still too strong of a pin placement, but you could go further from PAP and get that kind of reaction. Morpheous balls just respond so well to layouts, that is what is so special about them. If drilled properly you will always get the desired reaction.

Ex, so let's say I have a Animal Untamed set up weak (polished up, pin next to ring, MB in track). Will it provide better carrry than a mod-line track ball set up for spotty conditions (say, a Havoc, Zoid, or Threat setup as a 4x4)? I know this is subjective...

pjr, pin next to ring is not really a weak drilling if you PAP is as you listed earlier.

To answer your question, the Untamed LIGHTLY polished would be better suited for spotty conditions than any of the listed balls........except a 4x4 on a Havoc, the Havoc can be a strong ball if drilled strongly. With similiar surface preps though, the Untamed would be the ball.

I hope this helps

Hey PJR,

I like what Ex said, the Untamed should handle spotty conditions better than the balls mentioned in comparison.  FYI, if you polish up an Animal and drill it pretty weak, that would also still work on med/lite.  The mass bias on these balls have become so strong that they really do dictate and control the shape and reaction.  It's pretty amazing actually...hope this helps.

Now you guys, DW and Lanebed are all talking about polishing up the Untamed.  Gotta try it out...

Thanks guys. I am slightly confused on one item. I was under the understanding that placing the MB in the track is a weak position (for drier conditions)... and the pin next to ring (at 4 1/2" or so from PAP) was a tame layout. Am I screwed up here? What is tamer than that (other than pin over bridge, of course)?

So, Bob, to go weaker, then I move the pin to 5" or more from the PAP...right?
