Animal Box Finish
« on: November 13, 2005, 08:21:23 AM »
I was wondering what the box finish for the Animal was because I bought it for heavy oil.  The first couple weeks I got it it was hooking great in heavy oil, but now it won't hook at all in heavy.

It's a compound finish - Track Clean N' Sheen.  Try taking a green scotchbrite pad and lightly scuff the cover.  I find that a light scuff every now and then brings the ball pretty close to box finish.

Be sure to clean the ball after every 3 game set, and if you can, wipe it down before each shot.

I use a green scotch brite pad right now.  I clean it with this after every set.  I have soaked it in warm water with dawn and I had my pro shop owner wet sand it, but nothing seems to help when there is heavy oil.  The ball shines when there is medium though.

I am on my second Animal and have loved both (I sold my first because it was used and it had to be plugged and redrilled for my use; I wanted a NIB, first drill). Anyway, they have both been great and never "died" on me ... HOWEVER, I use a micro-fiber towel on ALL of my stuff after every time they are on the lane, I'm meticulous about cleaning my stuff after every league and/or practice session, and I will take them in to my pro shop, as needed, for a thorough cleaning and sanding/scotch-briting to maintain the surface condition that I want and need.  I
IMHO, you need to take better care of your stuff than ever before. My two cents ...

Hey TheMan,

Take a burgundy pad with Cleen and Dull and apply it to the cover.  For heavy oil, I had much better success with the cover sitting at 400-600 grit.  How long have you been throwing this ball in heavy oil?  It may have soaked up quite a bit as well...

I bowl on a THS and the pattern there is usually medium.  I usually don't see too much heavy oil.  Maybe 5-10 times in our league (31 weeks).  I hve seen heavy oil about 4-5 times this year in the first weeks.

Hey TheMan,

I buy mine form a car detail shop, they have most of the different grits there (burgundy, grey, white...etc).  Hope this helps...

I think box is 1200 compound....not totally sure...but my Animal did the same thing...great ball...but needed to keep is scuffed for heavier stuff...I kept mine at 600 !  This ball can "sheen" up really easy....for me...it caused too much at the break point for my liking.  Had to have KOTM 'castrate' it just a bit for me!  Then I didn't have to scuff it as much....but nonetheless...I liked this ball very much and kept mine between 600 and 800

Agree with everyone said here, just wanted to add I buy my scotch brites at the local Home Depot....they have all of them that I need, including Burgundy, Green, and Grey.

The animal is an awesome ball for heavy oil but just like most have said the cover should be dulled to about 600-800 grit.  With the OOB cover the animal is great for med/heavy oil.
