animal vs. rule
« on: December 27, 2004, 02:51:04 AM »
My proshop guy said that the rule is a stronger ball than the animal. Even with the rule being reactive he said. What are the thoughts of this. I told him he probably thought that because of the hand that he has. But he stuck by his decision. What do you guys think.

That is subjective and depends on the condition you bowl on. On most patterns the Rule will will out hook the Animal because of the amount it hooks on the backend. If the ball needs to get into an early roll to hook the Animal will be the stronger ball.

For me the Rule is stronger on all but really flooded lanes.  Hope this helps.

In my opinion, the Rule is stronger on medium conditions because that is what is was built for. (if both balls are drilled the same) The Animal on that shot will lose its energy quicker and thus look like its not hooking as much, etc. The Animal also comes with a shinier surface than the Rule, which helps it get down the lane more than the cover on the Rule does. However, the one 1 Animal I have sanded to 600 is by FAR the strongest ball I have in my bag on a fresh heavier oil shot, and right now I have 3 Animals and 3 Rules, not to mention countless other equipment from Track. I have to put the ball away as soon as the heads go due to how aggressive the ball is. The original dull Phenom I have is even stronger than all of my Rules. However, the new Rule GP2 sounds like it will be an oil loving monster, even more than the Animal. Speaking of the Animal, ask Ex, he will tell you flat out it is his favorite oil ball of all time! I have to agree with him as well.

Happy Holidays!

Hey lilphyzx,

I agree with Mitch and Clint.  If there are some dry boards on the lane, the Rule will appear to look stronger because it should've been storing energy to that point in which it is then released causing for the stronger movement.

The Animal being particle rolls smoother and reacts sooner with a more gradual motion on the backend.

Here's a quick analogy for you.  We're driving on the highway going around a bend at 65mph with all season tires on the car.  We hit 10 feet of lite snow causing the tires to spin up and lose friction.  We get past the snow patch and hit dry road and the car "jumps" left, kind of fish tailing the backend.  Now imagine the same scenario with snow tires on the car, the car now just gradually eats thru the lite snow (never slipping) and evenly goes thru the turn.  This is basically what happens between a resin (which stores energy) and particle (which creates friction) on the lane.

Anything that can store energy and if released is more violent compared to an object that creates friction evenly.  The only time we truly see a difference between an all season tire and a snow tire is not when the road is dry (they both respond) but when the road is completely covered in snow.  Here you should see your all season tire skid forever and the snow tire kind of grab and give you some friction.  Well, the same goes for a resin ball compared to a particle.  Only on a complete flood would you see the particle kind of grab for you while the resin ball should slide 60 ft.  This applies across the board from even a dull resin to a polished resin and is the reason why you hear guys say, my polished stuff out hooks my dull stuff....the key is friction and stored energy guys.

4th in line and I totally agree. If you are on a shot with fresh backends or that has a shorter length the Rule will move more because it will open up the lane better. If you are on a long flat pattern the Animal is without question better.
