Another GP2 Newbie =)

Hi guys.

I've been bowling about 4-5 months.. average about 170ish.. Tryin to get to 190 or so by the end of summer  I just bought a Gp2 and need some help on how i should do the layout!

I throw medium revs and medium to high speed ball, with a fairly high track.  Im actually working on trying to get more revs on my release, but its harder then I thought it would be

I have an Xception drilled pin over ring , with the hammer 1 inch right of the thumb hole.  It hooks real nice when the lanes are medium-light oil, but I cant seem to get it to attack the same way on the heavier oils..

Also, I've been working on trying to get deeper and playing through the lane more.

So, what do you guys suggest?

Turtle,

Welcome aboard.

How much oil are you seeing?? Is it a med, med/hvy or a flood? The amount of oil will determine how you lay it out.

As Rock says, the GP2 is an oil lover. Putting the mass bias (pic of the core on the ball) closer to your PAP, you will see an earlier roll out of the ball which is what one wants for heavy oil. Get back to us on Rock's q and we will go from there!

I play in a league with a good amount of oil.. I'm a newbie and don't really know the layout of the lanes..

Lets just say I want to drill the ball for medium-heavy oil conditions

Also, i've read many reports of the GP2 "burning out" on lighter oil lanes.. Is this true, and can you explain to me what that exactly means? Does that mean i shouldn't use this ball at all when the lanes dry up?

Welcome turtle82, First I see you are averaging 170 and that tells me you are missing spares. Strikes are nice but to be a consistant 190-200 bowler you'll have to cover your spares. Your strike game will come as well as your knowledge of the game. Good Luck.....

Welcome to the Track team bud!

First off, what burning up means is that the ball encounters friction too soon and the ball loses it strength too early. The GP2 is not a ball that you should be using on lighter oil patterns. It is going to be best suited for medium/heavy to heavy oil conditions.

As for your layout: it is very difficult to suggest a layout without having more info on your game, but I will try. If you plan on using it for medium to heavy conditions I would say to have the ball drilled with the pin 3 3/4 from PAP (keep the pin below the finger line) roughly 2 inches above your midline. Place the close to your VAL. This type of layout will get the ball started early.......and the coverstock, as long as you are using it on enough oil, will still allow for some backend pop!

Wihthout knowing your PAP, a *GENERAL* layout would be to put the pin about 3 inches from your PAP and the mass bias in position 2 according to the drill sheets Track adds to each box. This would give you a good reaction on oil, but not setting the ball up for the HEAVIEST you will see. By setting the ball up to rol any earlier will make it condition specific, which is not what you want from your description. Also, setting the ball up to roll earlier will make it burn out on a drier condition, which means it loses its energy early in the lane and has nothing left for the backend. That happens as the ball creates friction on dry. The sooner it hits dry, the sooner the friction starts and the sooner the ball will try to roll. Rolling too early bleeds its energy and leaves nothing for the backend. That is why you here guys saying "that hit like a pumpkin" this is usually why that happens!

Do bowlers ever drill two balls the same way, kind of like a 1-2 punch in case they need to adjust to the lane condition? Or do you normally drill the layouts more specific which each ball?

I mean like, would it be a good idea o have my GP2 drilled the same layout as my Xception?  Since the Xception is a bit weaker than the Gp2.

How can i find out my PAP so that I can report it to you guys!

Im looking at a ball i threw today and it still has a few oil lane marks.. can i get my pap from that?

For your PAP rather than guessing I would suggest taking it to your pro shop operator and have him/her locate your PAP for you.

With someone wanting a GP2 to work on heavier conditions I wouldn't drill it with the same layout that you have on your Xception. I will stick with the advice that I have given already.

As Ex points out, drilling the GP2 like the Xception (which has a length drill on it) will not make the GP2 work as well as you want on what you are describing.
