another question for the tag team
« on: June 05, 2007, 05:30:45 AM »
whats a good way to work getting your thumb out of the ball sooner? lately it seems my thumb and fingers are leaving the ball at the same time, or close to it.

when im thinking about it i can get it out sooner but it throws off the rest of my game like hitting my mark and keeping the speed up.

Thanks in advance

Pretty much the same thing that is discussed here.  Maybe you'll find something of use to you.

Rick,
This sounds really familliar to me  Give him your knuckle ball analogy. I looked to see if I still had the message from you and it is gone  It "instantly" helped me. I would try to explain it but it will make much more sense coming from Presidente.

Willie,

Do you have a video of yourself bowling?

Normally the cause of a difficult thumb exit is keeping the wrist cupped through the release. Do you tend to do this?

have no video, going to Reno in 10 days, if i have the money im gonna get the video done there, then ill be able to post one. Not sure if im cupping my wrist through the release, will have teammate watch tomorrow night and let ya know

i just know it seems like my thumb and fingers are coming out at the same time, thinking about changing some pitches to see if it helps getting the thumb out quicker, but not gonna change anything until after Reno, dont wanna go out there trying something new.

It is probably a good idea not to change anything until you are done in Reno. What are your current pitches?

Hey willie,

Another possibility of your delayed thumb release is having the incorrect pitches in your thumb as my Tag Team partner is trying to assess.

Hypothetically, if you have left lateral in your thumb and your standard release is to go around the ball (generic shakehand), this will also cause you to hang.  You can ask Dpat and his crew, I've fixed about 5-6 guys that he's brought to me because their old driller gave them "all" left lateral.

Any decent athlete will "adapt" to what they have and try to make it work, I've seen this over the course of many years in my business.  Please also remember that drillers are "human", they give you their opinion which isn't necessarily correct to your individual game.  This sounds somewhat similar to spinner's problem when the hole is drilled at the incorrect angle, many drillers fix a "wrong" with a "wrong" by simply opening up the thumbhole till it's a cave and then you end up squeezing the ball.

Please check your pitches and get back to Tag Team and we'll do our best to help, thanks.

Hey Rick,

What should he do if it turns out his pitches are correct?

Good question Buck.  Then I would have to say that he is probably turning his hand too fast in the swing plane which then causes us to do 1 of 3 things:

1) We would have to pull the ball across our body to feel finger lift..or

2) We will lift back "thru" the ball in a slight clockwise motion..or

3) Continue motion to where we rotate 180 degrees or end up looking at our own palm when we finish the motion.

Imagine trying to throw a curveball but you turn your wrist inward too quick in the motion and now the baseball is facing you at your cheeks?  Where do we go from here?  Either we continue motion and pull our hand in front of our body or we flip the baseball back from "left to right" which is the reverse of what we wanted to do in the first place.  If we simply continue motion (without pulling it in front of our body) with our wrist, it would end up facing us. We would have rotated our hand 180 degrees which is identical to a spinner in bowling who goes from his hand under the ball to his follow thru of 180 degrees to where he now sees the back of his hand at the end of the follow thru.  End result....not good.

Very good question Buck...

i dont come around the ball at all, full roller is what the pro shop told me last night, track flare is over middle finger and thumb, not sure why my track changes so much, it was going between the fingers and thumb but never going over the fingers, now it is lol, and that really depends on which ball i throw, seems like my track is in a different area on on different balls, i dont know what the hell my problem is, maybe im just all screwed up, but it seems my balls are hooking more now than they ever have

got the pitches checked on my Phoenix last night, pitches for fingers are zero as far as forward and reverse, my thumb was 1/8 reverse, no left or right

willie,

There can be many causes to what you are having happen. You may not be turning the ball too quickly, but I would bet anything you are keeping your thumb in the ball too long. This happens to alot of us when we are trying to get more on the ball. It is basically taking us back in time to the point when we were taught to "hit up" on the ball.

Hey willie,

The standard full roller is achieved by a suitcase position with our hand in the ball and then rotating "clockwise" with our hand.  I grew up with this, I understand it pretty well.  If you were theoretically dead behind the ball, your ball track should've been dead even from fingers to thumb.

Hypothetically speaking, if we were to roll a ball "truly" with our hand behind it, it should track right between the fingers over the center of our thumb.  Once we see "any" variation of this in ball track, it means our hand is angled at the point of release to some degree.
