Different Animal
« on: August 21, 2005, 04:55:29 AM »
This summer I bowled in a different house with clean backends and lighter oil on the outside of ten board. Typical house shot and the high rev players were playing deeper and not using the outside as much as the lower speed players. I was able to play inside and score but one big game and then struggle. This is a high scoring house but noticed everyone was having the same problem. Lots of big single games but not really any high series. My track equipment drilled to roll early and old reliable Threat just would not react the same outside due either the over under or the pearlized Threat. I had drilled up an Animal to go long for the upcoming winter league and really had not used it. Tried it with out of the box finish and it skated all the way down the lanes and did not move at all. The next week scuffed it up with gray scotch pad and got some movement out of the thing. Next week sanded the Animal with 600 grit on my spinner. My thinking was, if this is too much grip I would hit it with a lite shine. I will not be changing anything for a while, this animal rolls through the mid lane &
then starts to make its arc to the pocket about 30 to 35 feet from the pocket and does not quit. Amazing only about 3 10 pins left and O yes that many 8 pins.
I am a stroker and about 15 mph most of the time. It seems like no matter what I do the balls works the same. Down and in is OK, if I open up the shot and hit it a little harder I get more backend with the same arc. The Animal was 15.3 with 3 1/2 top and 3" pin. The Pin was placed just above my two finger grips and 5" to the PAP and from the PAP to the MB is 3". My grip was moved over from the CG about inch and 5/8 so a small weight hole was used to bring back the side weight to 3/4 oz. along with about 3/8 finger weight.

Jody,
I'm not exactly sure what you're asking? Or maybe you're not asking anything, just making a comment. But you did say in the first part of your post, that you had an Animal, drilled up to go long for the upcoming winter leagues. To me, that is not a "go long" drill. I am a stroker/tweener also. I usually throw between 15 and 16 mph. I also own an Animal. That ball you're showing has a fairly strong drill, especially since the ball has an asymmetrical core.
You're showing, early roll, with a strong continuous backend.

If I were you, I'd work on a different release. If I had an Animal drilled like that, no way would it ever skate thru the breakpoint in OOB condition. Are you bowling on synthetics? Wood?

Also, you have to consider lane play sometimes. Don't try and make the ball do too much. You might actually have to move to a different starting spot on the lanes.
Some days you're the bug....some days you're the windshield...that's bowling!

600 grit on an Animal should be saved for med/heavy to heavy oil.  If it wasn't "hooking", it may have been burning up.  Heavy oil balls like the Animal let you know when to put them up.  They look like they're skating and hit like wet paper.  On a side note, add a little bevel to weight hole to avoid any potential cracking or chipping.

The Animal's cover was one of the largest, most aggressive particles Track has used...dulled down it becomes a monster than can burn early without proper oil.
