Title: Arsenal Question
Post by: mikeny278 on May 18, 2005, 03:28:05 AM
Hi,

I have been reading how symmetrical equipment is good for Sport and PBA shots because of consistency off the breakpoint.  Well, what is a more expensive, asymetric ball better for then?  Are these more effective on a typical house shot?

I ask because I am looking to update my arsenal, but only for a medium/heavy or medium typical house shot.  I never face long oil patterns, and do not plan on bowling any tournaments.  I am thinking the Xception (Green) and the Heat would be all I need, but I am interested what the regulars have to say.  I throw medium revs, and above average speed.

Thanks

Asymmetrics are good for that type of shot, its just that MOST prefer symmetrics due to them not being as jumpy off the break. Someone like me, who tracks high, has little tilt, and a higher speed, I can use asymmetrics on a crisp backend shot as my style does not lend to much backend in the first place. Of course, no matter which ball(s) you pick, you will need someone who can find your PAP to properly drill an asymmetric ball.

The 2 balls you have picked are really good, but, they are both polished, which mean if you ever hit much oil for whatever reason, you would be stuck as both of them will skid in oil no matter what drill. An original Rule would probably be the better choice, and if it hooks more than you like, a simple surface adjustment will take care of that. The Heat would be a great second ball to go to when the lanes break down!

mikeny278,

I feel that both asymmetricals and symmetricals are good on nearly any pattern. Many of voiced their dislikes for asymmetrical equipment for various reasons. 1- Maybe they had a ball laid out(asymmetrical ball) and it was not done properly so they are against asymmetrical, 2- maybe they have not tried asymmetrical because their ball company of choice has not really made one (this is slowly changing because most companies are making them now). It could be a number of reasons.

There have even been ball companies in the past that said that asymmetrical equipment is simply a myth. The MB is not that great of a factor in reaction is another statement often made. HOWEVER, look around. One of the companies that said that about asymmetrical equipment just released an asymmetrical ball. It is reviewed in this month's BTM.
