Since D Pat has spent quite a bit of time with me at the shop lately, he tells me I have some pretty good analogies that help the regular Joe Bowler understand things better, so here goes another one.
In regards to maximizing our natural lift or torque, our span or grip distance becomes the key. I use a football in the shop to help demonstrate. Most of us (without having large hands) cannot hold an official size football directly in the middle and throw the ball effectively. Our hands will try to reach as far as they can and we can rotate our wrist in the proper motion but the football will not go into a nice smooth spiral. We have to back down toward the narrower part of the football until we can get a grip on the football and rotate our wrist (as before) and then we can create that nice quick revving and smooth spiral through the air (max torque). Now go one more step, go down on the football even more and now we’re pinching the ball. We again can make the same wrist motion but the ball will have less revolutions and the spiral is weaker once again.
Moral of this analogy:
1) A span too long does not allow for maximum revs on the object
2) To maximize our natural lift effort, we would want to find that happy medium to where our hand can get around the object comfortably and then rotate/lift
3) If we wanted to decrease our revs naturally (for a stronger rev to speed player), we can go a hair shorter on the span without having to sacrifice on going down to a harder surface ball and losing area on the lane.
Just a thought for my Revolutionists out there…..bowling better by bowling smarter.
