A Tip from Tenpinspro: How to create maximum torque..
« on: November 15, 2005, 09:51:37 PM »
Since D Pat has spent quite a bit of time with me at the shop lately, he tells me I have some pretty good analogies that help the regular Joe Bowler understand things better, so here goes another one.

In regards to maximizing our natural lift or torque, our span or grip distance becomes the key.  I use a football in the shop to help demonstrate.  Most of us (without having large hands) cannot hold an official size football directly in the middle and throw the ball effectively.  Our hands will try to reach as far as they can and we can rotate our wrist in the proper motion but the football will not go into a nice smooth spiral.  We have to back down toward the narrower part of the football until we can get a grip on the football and rotate our wrist (as before) and then we can create that nice quick revving and smooth spiral through the air (max torque).  Now go one more step, go down on the football even more and now we’re pinching the ball.  We again can make the same wrist motion but the ball will have less revolutions and the spiral is weaker once again.

Moral of this analogy:

1) A span too long does not allow for maximum revs on the object
2) To maximize our natural lift effort, we would want to find that happy medium to where our hand can get around the object comfortably and then rotate/lift
3) If we wanted to decrease our revs naturally (for a stronger rev to speed player), we can go a hair shorter on the span without having to sacrifice on going down to a harder surface ball and losing area on the lane.

Just a thought for my Revolutionists out there…..bowling better by bowling smarter.

Rick,

I recently (in the last month and a half) have proven your theory to be quite correct.  I got 2 used balls of this site and decided to try lengthening my span on them since one of the balls had a nice feel to it as it was (with the longer span).  Well, Needless to say, the rest of my arsenal has now been lengthened as well.  I am able to throw the ball much smoother with more revs and less effort.  Just a testiment to what you are saying.

Rick, shouldn't there be tips here on steps to take to find that "happy medium?"

It seems everyone has their own idea in determining the correct span. However the most popular way nowdays seems to be to make a mark with a pen half way between the first and second finger joints. Then insert thumb in ball and these marks on fingers should lay on the front edge (side closest to palm) of the finger holes if the span is correct.

Now, depending on how person lays their hand on the ball, these marks on the fingers in relation to where they lay on the finger holes can vary as much as 1/8-3/4 inch depending how relaxed a person has his hand. I can even make my mark/finger hole relation vary 1/8-1/4 inch everytime I insert my thumb into ball and lay fingers over the holes and trying to relax my hand as much as possible.

To sum it up, could you elaborate on how to find this "happy medium", how relaxed a persons hand should be when laying fingers over the finger holes, and etc. so as not to create variation everytime that person like myself in the example given above tries to duplicate this measurement?

Also, is this where a person starts, so that he/she can find that happy medium?

*pushing Brickguy out of the shop...lol*

I "KNEW" you would ask this...lol  Okay, typically you are correct but there are always exceptions of course.  I'd be more then happy to help anyone who wants to check to see if their span is correct but I'd prefer to do it via phone or pm's, thanks.
