Best ball for...
« on: February 08, 2007, 01:54:30 AM »
Pleanty of head oil and flying backends.  I've been using my Desert heat but it still flips pretty hard and is hard to predict.  Same with my Equation and PM.  I was thinking about either using my Robo or my Black widow in hopes to bleed off some energy before the break point.  I was also thinking of dulling my Desert.  Maybe this would smooth out the breakpoint?  Does anyone else struggle with this condition?  Any suggestions would help

I have been using my Inertia for a similar purpose for a while now.
It is drilled with the pin below the fingers 5" from the PAP and the mass bias about 5.5" from the PAP.  I took the finish to a 500 grit Abralon pad.

For a surface that dull, the ball is still surprising clean through the front part of the lane.  But the surface does give a strong midlane reaction to help bleed energy before it hits the backend.

This setup for me creates a very smooth reaction that should help on:
1. oily fronts and very dry backends or
2. flooded middle of the lane with very dry track area

I've heard about the 1.5-2 inch pin to pap drill pattern, and the mb on the negative side would probably create the reaction I'm looking for, so that will be in mind for the next ball, but I've got five balls right now and just cant justify a new one yet.  I'll try the Widow at 2000 and probably put another coat of delayed reaction on the Desert for this Fri.  Thanks all for the the input, I'll post later on how this works.

The layout carl gave is the layout I have on my Inertia and then with a 4000 abralon finish, I was able to play where I wanted on a condition that was only 35 feet long and fresh stripped backends.

Bingo, The Layout on an Inertia that Carl mentioned is now mine!  I was able to get my hands on my Proshop owners Inertia with a control drill on it with the pin only 1.5-2 inches from pap and the MB left of thumb in the track area.  Hopefully I will get it early this week drilled for me and ready to go.  I got very lucky, and I'll post when I use it.

As far as My Fri. League I used my desert with a heavy coat of Delayed Reaction and it worked well the first two games and I struggled with over/under the third...200, 238, 156.

It sounds to me like polishing the Desert Heat might work better for you.

Not really, polish on really dry or burnt lanes will react to fast. Once the ball hits the dry the polish will make the ball jump left to fast. The smoother or duller the surface the more even the reaction. You will burn off more energy causing it to not over react. You may hit a little weak but I am sure we all rather hit a little weak in the pocket and shot at corners and maybe some small splits like 5-7's or for the leftys 5-10's rather then having to much overreaction and shooting at big 4's, or grandma's teeth.

I was having the same problem with my Desert Heat overreacting on the backend. It would look good until the last third of the lane and then it would fly. I hit my Desert with three coats of the Delayed Reaction polish and wow what a difference. The polish took away the over/under and took 8 to 10 total boards off.

Sorry Scoot but I disagree on this one. Some of it depends on ball speed but the polish should get it down the lane farther and the reaction should happen later with more energy left for the hit, causing more pin action and less splits. The backend is already dry so the reaction should be the same but the breakpoint should be longer causing a stronger entry angle into the pocket and more messengers, and no I would not rather hit a little weak, I will figure out the shot and when I do the last thing I want is ringing ten pins. Nothing more depressing than throwing what seems to be a great pocket hit and getting tapped!
