Bob Learn Jr!
« on: June 05, 2005, 08:02:47 AM »
Just wanted to say great job to Bob Learn who gave it his  all but came up just pins short of an exemption in 12th place. Bob has always been one of my favorite pro bowlers, dating back to 1996 when I crossed with his step-son at Eastway lanes in a junior tournament. Was always a class act everytime I saw him. He had said if he did not earn an exemption, he would retire. If that is true, so be it, Bob had a great career and will be missed by many!

Ours is a sad excuse for a sport right now!

The game itself is great.

But to be one of the top 75 in the world in sport and not make hardly a cent at it is just sad.

Great pros with great performances not in.
Byron Smith
Bob Learn
Randy Pederson
Del Ballard
Dennis Horan

And I bet our own Jon Brandon is great!

This and a sport where one aspires to make maybe 2,000,000 dollars over a 20 year carreer.

Hell Tiger Woods has made more than this playing in 8 Memorial Tournies.
That guy could show up one week a year in golf and make more than the great Walter Ray could make in his whole carreer.

It's sad because many of the very good pro golfers really love our sport, Mark Calchevechia and Jeff Sluman and if there were ANY money in they would love to give it a whirl.

SAD SAD SAD.

My hat's off to the great performances by those who made the cut and those other 6 to 10 that were close.  GREAT bowling!

REgards,

Luckylefty
PS I still can't believe that there is not a place for a great bowler like Randy Pederson on this low money tour, I swear I saw him keep up with the truly great Norm Duke earliest this year!
PPS, over 1000 people play pro football in the NFL, over 700 people play baseball, over 500 to 600 people play pro golf on various pro tours around the world.
Bowling the lowest paid of all of them has about 65 people who are allowed to try to make a living.  Give me a break!

Lucky...how did you read my mind? Some of the best in the world are losing the right to compete let alone make any money at all. So sad....

Well, I, for one, would like to see more exempt bowlers and/or additional exemptions ("x" # of career wins, "X" wins in a season for multiple years exemptions, ALL MAJORS have the same # years exemption - 3 perhaps, 5 is way too many for someone who has 1 good tournament (IMO)).

It all comes down to $$ and the more exemption, the more the pot has to get spread around. Heck, we can't even get a 12 frame game for the richest jackpot ever offered (Motel 6).

I remember hearing how one of the purposes behind the exempt tour was to limit the number of bowlers "exposed" to the public's eye, in order that John Q. Public could pick out a favorite bowler or three and follow their career. This idea's intent was to build fan loyalty so that the PBA would have a continuing set audience.

Well, I believe they blind-sided themselves on this one because they lost out on an already built-up fan base for great bowlers such as Bob Learn. When he won that Erie PBA stop with that great 4 game series including a 300, he won a HUGE number of Pennsylvania (at least) blue-collar fans that have continued to follow his career and his every entry. NOW the PBA has lost that fan base and disheartened many of us, in their near-sighted, tunnel-visioned quest for the almighty dollar.

Good points LL,

I still don't understand why the field was closed to this small a number.  Typically when hosting any tournament, wouldn't you want "more" participants?  I understand there has to be some reward for the guys who are there week after week and contributing.  However, limiting the field means you have less money to spread around (or just make prize money for that matter) and we already know about their past financial problems.  I say leave the exempt players but go ahead and hold rabbits like they used to but open the total number of eligible players per week to get a bigger draw.  What are all the non-exempt players trying to qualify for now, something like 4 spots per week?  Too tough to do...just my 2 cents.
