Bowling on a house shot similar to the Shark.....
« on: June 13, 2008, 04:56:59 PM »
Coming in to the summer league, I knew I would be bowling on a 43' shot, that is light in the middle and heavy to the outside. My best games thus far the two weeks its been going on have always been in the first game. Strangely, what I don't see the last two games are carrydown. What I see is a very fast transition to break down. Now I'm at the point to where if I stay in the middle, I'm overhooking, if I try to play a bit further out the ball checks up and hits the 3-6 pocket.

So I'm thinking one of two things-either I need to put less surface on my equipment(in my sig) or I need to move even further left(but I'm already at 33-35 out the gate). Or just maybe should I move right with a piece with some surface, playing down and in?

If it helps, I'm now up to about 20-21 mph and judging by my backend my rev rate is higher than what it was before(400-425)

Input?

Why not move left?

Eliminate the grab at the bottom.  You could practice this summer a different wrist position.  Full reply is on trackbowling.comhttp://

Hey X,

Try moving your breakpoint. Where are you looking on the lane. If you are looking at the arrows try look at your breakpoint to help your ball push. Also what are you starting with and where are you laying th ball down at when you start. Just because you start standing 33 won't mean you lay it down on 33. If I stand 20 I lay it down about 15. So keep that in mind also.

I agree with scoot as well. I shot a tournament with a similar shot as that over here in Europe and it was brutal after 2 games. No carry down and the lanes were broke down all the way. What helped me was to focus further down the lane. Also, i had to be very careful with moving left as this meant that i would be laying my ball down in even more dry.

I did find moving a few boards right (feet on 20, 11/10 at the arrows) with a more aggressive ball (1000 w/ polish) and hitting 8/9 at the break point was effective as i did see a little oil/carry down. However, this line tended to have a bit over/under to it and i found myself having to be very precise. This is something that i was able to find later in match play after 5+ games.

So, with the addition of adjusting my eyes further down the lanes and matching up the ball surface with what i saw my ball doing on the lanes was key.

I think this type of shot takes some getting used to especially when we as bowlers are not used to having the first 10 boards gone and taken out of play. Knowing what each ball does and when to go to them goes a long way on this type of shot.

Sorry for the long post, i just wanted to get my experience on this sort of condition out there. Hopefully it can be of some use to you.

I see what you guys are saying.  Well, I did say I start at 33.  By the time the ball is off my hand and on the lane it's at 26.  At the arrows, I'm typically at 16-17 and my breakpoint I've seen can't be any further right than 10 at the end of the pattern.

I guess I could try a straighter approach so I can have my breakpoint further right.  Thanks for the options.

X you don't have to walk straighter. Just make sure you know how much you drift. Then when you line up make sure you take that into account when you get yourself lined up. In fact this could be a good thing because now you will know how much room you have before you are maxed on where u can move to.

This is about the only thing I remember from Dick Ritger camp I went to when I was 15. Find out how many boards you drift. Typically, no drift you would stand roughly 7 boards left of what you want to hit if you want no swing. So, straight up 10, stand on 17. If you drift 7 left, you need to stand 7 boards further right, so stand on 10, drift 7, slide on 17, and then you would be able to play straight up 10. Now, knowing this drift number can help you learn to control your angles. If you slide on 17 and you hit 9, your breakpoint would be 8, hit 8, breakpoint at 6, etc. It is at least a starting point. I know for me, when I stand right, I drift more left, but if I start out on 40, I only drift 2-3 boards versus starting on 10 and sliding on 20. But, it will give you a place to start and guestimate what would happen if you stood here and looked here.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean straighter in terms of approach.  I meant in the line I play so I can stay in the oil longer.

My post has nothing to do with approach. If you know your drift, you can use basic math to know exactly where to stand to accomplish the angles you want to play. Then it is just up to you to soften your hand or increase your ball speed or whatever you need to do to play that angle.

Oh, okay.  I understand what you're saying.  League is tomorrow, so I'll see how it goes.
