Bridge Cracking
« on: January 31, 2004, 09:49:05 AM »
Recently got finger tips put into my Triple Threat, and the bridge cracked.  Does anyone else have problems with cracking occuring with their Track equipment, because now I am afraid the same thing will happen to my Phenom.  Also, has anyone had this happen before to them?  The crack is very small, but will it start breaking away and continue to get worse?

Thx

Most of the time when you get cracking around the fingers in a bowling ball, especially when you have finger tips, it is because the driller did not bevel/round the holes off enough. If you leave the edge shard, it will almost always break.

I have had several Track balls in the last 2 years, and I have not had one crack occur for me.

My pro shop warned me that Track balls tend to be more brittle than other balls.  There is just a small crack on the bridge, and not too deep either.  Is this just going to keep getting worse?  How long does it take to break out where I would not be able to use the ball?  I have a tournament in a couple weeks and was planning on primarily using this ball for it...

Thanks

mike,

I have drilled and used several company's equipment, and the only company that cracked for me (every ball except one) was Ebonite, and I think that is because their coverstock is thinner than most.

I have still yet to have a Track ball crack on me. I have drilled many track balls as well, and have not had one of those crack for a customer either. I think the pro shop may be telling you that so that you will not want him to replace the ball or something.

Depending on the crack, it could certainly get worse. Some people get a crack near the fingers and it never cracks out. The crack itself will determine if it will crack out totally or not.

Hey Mike,

I've drilled over 100 Track balls and had only one problem.  I have seen your bridge cracking happen though but on different balls.  The old Col boss did it a lot, I believe it's from the material used in order to create the low rg look.
I learned at a seminar a few years back that in order to create a lower rg ball, the material used to wrap the block was a lot lighter having less density then the core, therefore allowing the weightblock to take over and rev up vs using a heavier material around a block which in turn creates a little heavier mass/density towards the outside of a ball which in turn creates more of a high rg ball because it has more effect over the block.  I've also had it happen to any ball when the bowler has a high track, usually inverted and very close to fingers.  Also any bowler who lofts the ball a fair amount...all these things can attribute to this along with what Excaliber has mentioned.  I also mentioned before about having a certain amount of parallel impression drilled in a ball which I believe is what Bbridges is stating. Somewhat hard to pinpoint.  Hope this info helps some....
