Infinite. Lane oil patterns are an analogous thing and therefore not limited in number. Then add the cahnges over time, playing and dissipation, and you get lost...

I agree with dizzy.  The patterns are endless and so are the names unless you mean to generically label them regardless of distance, blending, and density.

... and just another thought: even if you know the patterns or the one at hand and might have a strategy for it, the numerous lane surfaces would change the pattern's "effect" in ever more ways. It's hopeless

Gee diz, thanks for the encouragement....lol

Actually Snoop, patterns were a little more generic back in the day before they came out with oil tanks that could move independently and then came the jet spray. Then again, the old bug sprayer in hand (I've done it) probably never laid out a consistent pattern either...

Ahhh, I love bowling!

I cannot understand what people find about golf... you can SEE the sand traps, the trees and the water  But bowling? Now, THAT's a challenge by invisible threats!

To make matters even worse you have different types of oil. Each oil reacts differently to different surfaces. Then you have the condition of the lanes themselves, whether or not they have been maintained, old or new, resurfaced recently or not, etc.

JESS CHRIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I though knowing the layout, hand postions, the ball, core, coverstock, etc..... It just come down to ONE thing, just throw the F-ing(excuse my langauage) thing down the lane and don't worry about it all.

The thing is, even with many different patterns and surfaces, the trick is almost always finding a little dry spot that you can use to get the ball to turn over and hook.  Sometimes that dry spot is closer to the bowler (shorter patterns), sometimes it's further away.  Sometimes there's not enough dry for the ball to really recover and you need to move your breakpoint further left to either avoid the oil outside or so that it simply doesn't have as many boards that it has to cover (long patterns are frequently like this).

It doesn't really matter what the pattern looks like.  A graph like the one posted for Nationals won't always resemble the actual oil that gets put down.  It's an approximation (length more accurate than shape, and when you start talking about the buff area, there's no telling what you'll really get).   You can't look at your equipment, look at the pattern, and draw a shape of the ball path you expect to take.  The pattern only lasts so long on the lane when there are a bunch of people on a pair.

So don't fret that there are jillions of possible patterns.

There is definately an infinite number.

The new generation oil machines can even put different units of oil PER BOARD!!! It can be a horrific challenge.
Looking at a graph it can actually make a lane pattern appear easy...and initially it very well may be. The thing that makes them difficult is the transition they go through.

Goodluck,
Carl
