Drilling new Hexplosion
« on: April 29, 2005, 06:26:22 AM »
I'm picking up a Hexplosion, it was just too good of a deal to pass up, and I'm torn on how to drill it.  It's replacing my old dry lane ball which has been very over/under lately.

I've got high rotation (75-90) and revs (400+) and as I have heard this ball can really get sideways on the backend I was thinking of drilling it to tame that tendancy. 4x2 or 4x0, or possibly even the 315/rico layout.

Suggestions?  Please?

What has worked well for you in the past with a ball similar to the Hexplosion? And, can you describe the over/under of the old ball. Is it possible there is more oil on the inside/less outside than in the past, causing the over under? Plus, what is your old dry lane ball?

Thanks!

My previous and only skid/snap type bowling ball is/was a Rhino Pro Purple.  Very early reactive ball I've had for 13 years now.  Actually had it for a 6 little over six months, then my dad died and I quit bowling, fast forward 12 years, I got divorced and starting bowling again 9 months ago to fill up new found free time. So it has only has about 1 year and half of bowling on it, but a decade in the garage may have something to do with it's inconsistent reaction.

The pin on this ball is right in the palm. I can't find anything that looks like a cg mark to me. I'm not sure what the core looks like, but suspect it may be a pancake. If the labels have anything to do with it, the B logo is 6 3/4 inches from grip center and the Rhino logo is above the fingers.

As far as the reaction; I used to throw it straight up 5 and the ball would go 45-50 feet and turn HARD into the pocket, very angular but very predictable, but this was 12-13 years ago and I'm not sure of the oil but I'm guessing it was a 35-40 foot flat pattern.  Now, if I throw straight up 5, the ball reactly nearly as soon as it hits the lane and goes brooklyn, must be outside the wall.  Throw straight up 7 and it skis nearly all the way to the pins, comes up light of the pocket.  Try to bounce it off the wall and who knows where it will end up, low, high, could go anywhere.

This ball does not flare at all, I think this may be why it I get it's so o/u on this condition, if I try to catch any oil, the oil stays with the ball when it hits the backend, mucking up it's reaction.

This probably doens't help much, but there it is.  Sorry.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Drilled the ball 4x2.  I would have went 4x0 but the pin was just under 3 inches.

This ball is much stronger than I expected. It was 10+ boards stronger than the dry lane ball I was expecting it to replace and 5 boards stronger than my medium oil ball (Predator Pursuit, low load particle assymetric) on the same conditions.

I knew the ball was supposed to have good backend and drilled 4x2 expecting to tame it at least a little, get a little more midlane and a strong arc to the pocket, but the ball goes 50 feet and makes wicked angular turn to the pocket.

My pro shop only had the one, but if they had another I'd like to get it and drill it Rico to compare.

Could it possible give me the extra midlane and arcing motion I was trying to get with the 4x2 drilling?

PS

If anyone else is thinking of picking up one of these (you should, its a good deal) mind the flare, the drill sheet said to drill the x-hole 1 inch past the PAP for the 4x2 drilling but I put it on the PAP as part of my plan to tame the ball.  I still got nearly 6 inches of flare and actually clipped the edge of the x-hole on a few shots.  I never heard the ball thump or saw anything to indicate this on the lane, but inspecting the ball after it returned I could see the last  ring of flare went over the x-hole.  So I would suggest puting any x-holes 1 inch inside of your PAP.

Hey boondoggle,

I'll double check with Brian or Del on this for you but typically if we drill through the fingers and shorten the core as well as removing finger weight, it may help reduce some of the flare.  However, based on your higher rotation and rev rate, it'll probably still move a fair amount for you.

I've also polished a couple of Hexplosions that sealed the cover and that helped control it some in comparison.  Please also get back to us on your ending statics to see if drilling thru the fingers would even be a viable solution, thanks.
