Hey there FastTrackers, I am in need of your help AND an UNBIASED opinion. I am in the market for a new benchmark ball. My FAZ has seen better days and it is time to lay it to rest.
So, I've been looking at a few balls that may fit the bill and something else also crossed my mind. First of all, the balls I've been looking at are the Heat Blast and Storm Thunderstruck. I saw a friend of mine throwing the Thunderstruck last night and it was real smooth! I really liked his reaction. I've seen vids of the Heat Blast and it also looks smooth. Now, the other option that crossed my mind is buying another Solution Power Plus, and alter the coverstock to a compound/light polish finish.
Now, the Heat Blast can be had a www.bowlersdream.com for $69.95 plus shipping. I can get the Solution for $45 plus shipping. Or I can buy a Thunderstruck for about $90-95. I really need your honest, unbiased opinion on what my best option would be.
Just as a piece of info, my FAZ is drilled pin under bridge, cg in palm. So, I'd be looking to put the same drill on the ball I choose. This drill seems to give me a real smooth, controlled look.
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I like the choice of the Solution with an altered surface. Compound would easily make it a benchmark ball. I know how smooth of a reaction that ball can have and with compound that would only enhance how smooth it can be.

Carl, if I opt for the Solution, what grit should I take it up to?
I know it comes 800 grit from the factory, would 1500 be good, or do I need to go higher?

I would say to start with the compound over the box finish and adjust from there if needed. I did not do this to my Solution PP, but I did try this method with my Arsenal Aggressive and I ended up 2000grit and Clean n Sheen.

So, I should just add the compound before I take it up to a finer grit?
What should I use, clean and smooth, clean and sheen??

Definately Clean n Sheen. Clean n Smooth will take it to 1500....Clean n Sheen will help to give it more length and a control type backend reaction.

Well I like carls idea, yet I just check a few places online and it looks like you could have just picked up a new faz. Now I think I would have tryed to get the ball I know I have in that slot of my arsenal before trying to find a completly new ball. Yet this just my opinion. I seen that ballcellar.com has FAZ from 12-16 for $119.99 or so with shipping. Yet I trust carl and hope everything works out for ya.

Yeah, I could have gone the route of getting another FAZ, but I really wanted something a little different. Besides, I paid half what they are asking for the FAZ. Although, I'm glad you mentioned that site. I noticed they have 15 lb Sheer Havocs available!!
I loved that ball!! I may be making ANOTHER purchase!!

Im loving my Heat Blast right now. Smoothest rolling ball i have in my bag. It's drilled stacked with pin over bridge and I can throw it right up the 5 board and watch it smoothly walk into the pocket. I guess it depends on what type of player you are.

Hey Rock,
My Tag Team partner is correct. I drilled a couple of these as well (pin over mid and stack lev) and I've played with the cover on them endlessly. This ball will truly do whatever you do to it in regards of layout and cover adjustment....

Great, my Solution is on the way.
Can the coverstock alteration be as effective if done by hand or should I apply the Clean and Sheen by spinner??

Also, just to clarify. I am only adding the Clean and Sheen to the box finish of the ball, correct?
I don't need to take the coverstock grit up or alter it in anyway? I only need to put clean and sheen on the ball and I'm good to go?

Hey Rock, it just depends on smooth you want the cover to be. Anytime we use a spinner, it does offer us the capability of fining a cover more or better due to the speed of the application (identical to applying car wax with a buffer vs hand). You can still get a good cover adjustment by hand but you may have to do it a couple of times vs one pass on a spinner.

I recommend to just apply C&S over the OOB cover and then see what reaction it gives you. You will be the best judge of whether or not this is enough or is the reaction that you want bud. Hope this helps some...

Well, I'll probably end up taking it to the pro shop and using the spinner. It'll be easier for me to do that.
True, I'll have to see what the reaction I get is like and then adjust accordingly. Thanks for the input Rick!!

Rock, forgot to mention to be careful on a spinner with C&S. With a little too much pressure, it can shine up more than expected. I personally don't have that problem being 5'4" and 120lbs soaking wet..lol

<comes out from the beach in 85 degree weather> Rick was calling me from the back of a shrimp
If you truly want a great control piece, try to find an Arsenal Aggressive. The control and hit is really impressive. My affection for it is well documented here ;-) My wife loved hers also. The particle load was perfect. Not too heavy to cause burn but still allow some angularity downlane if needed. That gave me the best control and power of any Track piece including the FAZ and Solution.
That being said, if you can't find an AA, I would go with the ThunderStruck simply for the cover. Storm and Roto Grip's new reactive base is really good. IMHO, stronger with better read than Power Plus. Not as sensitive to oil changes which is a benefit for a control piece. I have several friends with ThunderStruck's at 2000grit Abralon and they are extremely smooth.
-
I'm sure...it is Thunderstruck solid that is being talked about ...no?
REgards,
Luckylefty
PS I have an Arsenal Aggressive sitting right in a box near me! Sweet!
Great specs and used but the person had the TINIEST fingers and thumb(like NEW)!

Open the door...see what's possible...and just walk right on through...that's how easy success feels..

That's correct although my wife has been bowling really well with the TS Pearl. It's been her primary ball since she got one a few months ago. She has a "Claraesque" look with it
Suprisingly smooth for a pearl ball.

I actually just placed an order for a solution PP from bowlingball.com and with the 10$ off from google it cost me 39.99 shipped. It was in the latest newsletter. I couldn't pass it up. If you would like to go this route and need the information LMK, I think I still have the email.

Whether you think you can, or whether you think you can't... you're probably right.

I agree with what rick is saying about how to apply CNS with the spinner and everything. Also you guys make fun of rick when it comes to riding rides at a theme park, but who is gona get in his way when he is surrounded by the hitmen. I mean come on, the only thing he has to worry about is getting anything if he buys that cotton candy.
I know I loves me the cotton candy.

Could you tell me how you got $10 off using google? I bought a solution pp and used google and it cost me $49.99 total.
Thanks

The google thing might have gone bye bye. I actually ordered mine a little (30 min) after midnight last night. It went through so I assumed that they had extended the google offer. Maybe I just got lucky?

I must have got in before the Google thing went away as I just tried it again and did NOT get the 10$ off. Still at 49.99 it's a great deal.
