Current Best Benchmark Ball?
« on: April 29, 2005, 02:21:03 PM »
My B-day is not too far away so I will be asking for 2 new balls for my B-Day. Ignoring the crap from the USBC what in your opinion would make the best benchmark ball at the moment out of all the Track equipment in the current lines and the few discontinued pieces you can still find fairly easily(Hexplosion, Thrash, etc.) I've been using my Thrash for a while but always end up switching over to my untamed(since it actually rolls now) or my Hex to get a better read with the lanes. Unless my thrash matches up right off my first guess I usually can't find a very consistant read with it. There are blowout sales on crashes and hexplosions and I was thinking a hexplosion would possibly be a good benchmark ball. I am looking for a strong controllable move on the backend though, I throw best with my hex and untamed because of the smoothness and control they give me, thrash is great when it matches up but I'd like to put this ball right inbetween the two.

Is the Hexplosion a good choice or would something more like a freak-a-zoid be more what I'm lookin for?

If you are looking for a benchmark ball..

Slash would be my call....

Just so versitile....easy to change surface......

Think a Hexplosion should fit in the niche you are looking for...

Hex,

I am going to put in another vote for the Slash. It is strong yet controllable on the backend. The Slash is very predictable in its overall reaction from foul line to the pin deck.

Hey hex, (Happy pre B-Day)

I also like the Slash as a very good all around ball.  If the Hexplosions are on sale, I'd grab one too.  Still a very good ball for the med/drier conditions.

My Havoc is a pretty good benchmark ball, but the Slash is really good, and has made its way into LOTS of bags because of this.

Whoa, lots of votes for the slash, the havocs got a few votes to though...main enphasis is on decent hook with control though, need to be able to play it straighter(sport shot league will be fun!) I need to put a profile together...I have no exact stats though, plan on getting on CATS and bowlersmap this summer with some coaching help but until then I'll just put up some general numbers. I'll say right now my ball speed is slow (12-14) and my rev rate is average, med revs.  The only doubt I have is the dull finish on the slash/with my speed. Fear of it will burn up early or check up/roll out early, unless I drill it weakly, and I'm not a big fan of buying a good ball and drilling it weakly. Perhaps some polish would help?

Hex,

You did make a good point and I should have touched on this when I first posted:

OOB the Slash will roll early because of the dull surface. I left mine with the OOB grit, but I put 1000 grit compound (Track's Clean n Sheen) over the surface. This allows it to get down the lane better, and still offers a controllable move on the backend.

Slash seems to fit quite well...Hey Track guys, if I do decide to pick one up, what might be a good way to drill it up. I need it to fit inbetween the my orig. Hex(drlled label) and my untamed(also label). My thrash is there currently...unsure on exact thrash drilling, pin is under, almost in the center of the grip, but the ball still goes long and gives a nice strong arc. Basic specs are slow speed around 12-14 with medium revs. I'd like to be able to play the lanes straighter with this ball...sorry I can't give you much but any ideas you could give me so I'm not clueless if I decide to pick one up?

Hex,

It would be difficult to suggest a layout that is going to totally allow you to square up to the lane, with that slow of ball speed that may be very difficult to accomplish unless there is a flood out there.

However, a good control type layout (also consider the surface change I mentioned previously) would be 3 3/4- 4 x 2.5- 3.<<<<weighthole on your PAP will also help.   This layout will allow for a nice arc, and it will not be overly aggressive in the backends.

Alright thanks a bunch...I'll see what happens, to tell the truth I really don't have troubles playing straight up with my thrash and hex...Hey Ex do you think maybe the Hexplosion would fit the spot better? Think it would be a good benchmark ball? I've heard it is more for the dry side but for me I'm sure it could handle medium oil, heck I use an eraser blaze and a power diesel for my heavy oilers.

Hey Hex,

Ex offers a good control layout but one question for you, how straight do you really want this ball to go?  If you move the pin to your center line, it would also stabilize the reaction some.  Your slower speed may be a small problem here in trying to keep the ball from a moving a fair amount.  That is unless of course your revs are pretty low to match that speed.  Just a thought...

Well I don't want it to go real straight...I mean it needs to hook more than a hex drilled label leverage. That hex is my current dry lane ball, and yes I am planning on also picking up something weaker than the hex. However...it should not hook more than an Animal Untamed drilled label leverage(yes I know I need to get away from stupid label leverage, driller always giving me that stupid layout)...I know that is a small hole to fill, if even possible I really don't know how the slash compares to the untamed. HERE are the 2 main reasons I want this ball.

1. BENCHMARK BALL! I need this ball to be the first one out of the bag and the one that I can read the lanes with...this does not need to be the go to ball, this needs to be the grab the old trusty *insert name here* and find out how this shot plays.

2. Medium conditions...My untamed can handle middle-heavy(along with my blaze and diesel) while the hex can handle drier and thrash is ok in medium oil I suppose but it if the backends are too dry or real clean it jumps real bad, need this ball to handle med oil with CONTROL.(goes back to benchmark ball)

Hope that clears it up a little? The reason I asked for it to go straighter is because I like to play it straight AND I'll be bowling sport shot real soon for the first time, need this ball to be controllable and smooth yet still powerful. Do you guys think the slash would still be the ball? I mean think about it, what IS the best Benchmark Ball...

Bowl on.... straighter is better anyway

duh...three things, benchmark ball, slower speed, like to play lanes straighter, making sure the point gets across. The last thing I need to do is buy another ball to add to my already overlapping arsenal, I already got enough of that.
