I am looking for layout suggestions for a Rule Delta 1. I am looking for a reaction which will give a decent amount of backend and which will match up with my specs, which are below.

Rule Delta 1
15 lbs.
3 oz. top weight
3" pin

Ball speed: 16-17 mph
Axis tilt: 10 degrees
PAP: 5 3/8" right 5/8" up
Revs: upper low to medium (I have never officially measured them)
Classification: Slightly speed dominant

My PAP has been changing recently. My latest measurement shows it to be 4 3/8 over and 1 1/2 up. How will this affect my layout considerations?

Chances are, someone will recomend the pin under ring or under bridge and MB on or near the VAL (position 3) to you. I have very similar specs to you except, my speed and revs about match (about the same speed as you but, a bit more revs) and I hated this drilling myself or, I had a delta with this drilling and I hated it! I typically like a bit more length with a bigger backend myself though! I probally would have liked it more if the MB was in position 2. BTW, with your new PAP it might be a different ballgame though. My specs are close to your old PAP.

PERSONALLY.....if I were you I would wait another week or so before drilling the ball. You are just working on the different release and the PAP may change slightly---------------SO that would make the ball react differently.

Give it a little more time bud.

Hey cd,

I agree with EX, bowl a little more to see if your release is actually changing so we can apply the proper layout for your desired reaction. One question, what ball (and how was it drilled) is giving you the different pap?

Thanks for the replies. I am going to have my pro shop guy watch me throw the ball with my different releases and measure the PAP for each, so that we can get to the bottom of this.

Actually all three of my balls are giving me the same PAP, which is different from my previous PAP with other equipment. I am going to narrow down the variables and then I will be back with a definite PAP for layout suggestions.

By the way, I generally use three different hand positions, for different conditions. How much can this change your PAP? How can equipment be drilled to account for different hand positions?

Is ball reaction mostly personal taste? I tend to like equipment which goes longer and has a stronger back end (pin up). I am not sure why this is. My guess would be that there are attributes in my physical game which lead to this. What kinds of things factor into choosing a desired ball reaction?

Hand position changes CAN change one's PAP dramatically....and it can not be much of a factor in their PAP location. So it is really dependent upon the individual. It is my opinion that layouts should be determined by the bowler's A GAME release.....then the different hand positions will change the reaction of the ball.

Ball reaction is definately based on what each individual bowler likes. Choosing a ball reaction depends on what you want a ball to do. My suggestion is if you have a knowledgeable pro shop operator.....let him decide how to layout an arsenal for you. He will know your game and should be able to make very good suggestions to you.
