Ball recommendations from my coach... feedback welcomed
« on: June 11, 2005, 04:45:54 AM »
Ok- after my 9th coaching session in Malden today my coach and I got to thinking about what I have for balls in my arsenal and layouts. He believes that I'm missing two key balls for now- one in the heavy oil range and one in the medium oil range. The one with heavy oil he thinks should be a layout of 45 degrees to my PAP, and place the CG and MB at a 10 o'clock stacked leverage. He also thinks the pin should be 4"-5". He believes with this drilling a weighthole may be necessary.

The medium oil ball he thinks should have a set up with the pin at 45 degrees from the PAP, with the CG in the palm of my ball, hopefully setting up an arcing type nature to the ball (not to aggressive, not too weak). He believes that this would be a great ball when carrydown comes into play.

So- I'm thinking along the lines of a GP2 for that heavier oiler with this layout and he had a suggestion for a Track Havoc as far as the medium ball (or do you think there'e another medium ball that will work from Track outside of the Havoc?). What does everyone think of this and do you believe these layouts will work fine for the looks I'm trying to achieve? Most of my stats are in my profile that I know....thanks for all the help and support.

Matt,

The GP2 for oil is a no brainer. The problem I have is the pin 4-5 inches from PAP. For a stroker I think the pin will need to be closer. If you are going to only use this ball on heavy oil just place the pin at the leverage position. As for the MB, have it placed on your VAL. There is virtually no question that the ball will end up needing a weighthole. I would say have it punched up, go out and throw it a few games and then have the hole placed to change the ball reaction if you feel necessary or placed to keep it the same.

I have a difficult time suggesting something other than the Havoc For the medium oil arc reaction. The Havoc was a very good ball. I don't know about it being "great on carrydown". Usually for carrydown you want a ball that is going to store most of its energy for later down the lane. Arc reactions generally spread the energy evenly throughout the entire lane. I think a ball like the Arsenal Angular may be a better fit.

What about the original Xception?  Speaking of Matt...you can call dibs on mine, I'm not getting the reaction out of it that I was hoping for.

I know you said medium, but the Slash for me is a great ball for me. It can handle about anything I see...except the extremes. Havoc was one of my favorites though too.....

GP2 is a no brainer for the heavy stuff, and the drills sound ok as well.

The 5.0 would work great for carrydown. HOWEVER.....I think it is above  mediums a tad.
